Camping Out-- Beginner Needing Suggestions for Tent

Hi, there--

I am a single mother who would love to camp this summer with my child. We love the outdoors! The problem is I don't know where to start. I think we will try a yurt sometime, but are also wanting to join some other families who will be using tents to camp out. We don't have a tent. I saw one at Costco for about $58--- it is expensive for me, but I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions. If it is a good one and easy to set up, I would look into buying it. I need a dummy-proof tent and would love some suggestions to make the experience a fun one.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

BiMart and other places have 75% off sales on all their tents every late August. You could get a great tent for $20 or so. We have a Coleman and love it. Maybe do the yurts this season and look for the sales late summer. A camp stove, a cooler and a good flashight/lantern are the other things I think are handy. Have fun! Also... Yurts and good campsites fill up quick! May want to make reservations now through Reserve America website which is an easy place to look for spots and make reservations.

Take a look at your local Fred Meyer store. They have a fairly good selection of tents in a variety of sizes beginning at very affordable prices.

Good on ya for camping with your child. There's no better thing for children than spending time in nature and learning how to be in nature (quiet, calm, observant and to learn).

Regards,
C.

There used to be an outdoor surplus store on Naito or 1st in Portland, just south of Hwy 30 interchange from I-5. I bought a decent sized tent for under $30 a couple of years ago.

Does anyone else know of this store or if it even still there?

I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of the store. It was all overstock or something. They also had other sports equipement. Try a search on outdoor equipment and surplus stores.

Hope you find what you need.

A good quality tent is VERY important, it is where your home will be away from home. Look for a rain cover and that will haev enough room for you AND most of your gear. Something that also can be secured. It found this site - might be helpful - I am sure there are others out there: http://camping.about.com/c/ec/1.htm

Have a great time!

Keep an eye out for a sale at joes. We got a really nice tent there last year for about $25. Just watch for a sale. or check craigslist. Most of the tents anymore are very easy to set up only having a few poles that are on a string and just fold out into one long pole. Have a great time camping. I can't wait to take my little one for the first time this year.

I'm sure you already got this response but check out Craigslist. This website has everything you can think of for sale (second hand usually) and I bet you'll find some great camping stuff. I always thought camping was so inexpensive until you actually have to start buying all the stuff for camping. Sleeping bags, tents, cots, food.... it adds up pretty fast! Good luck.
