I got renters insurance from state farm because that is where I have auto. Because it is multiline/multipolicy we get great discounts and it is only about $10/month! The agent did come to our home initially and it is based off the square footage and contents of the home.

Hi "New Mommy", my name is J.. I acutally work at my father State Farm Ins agency. The way that renters insurance works for our company is you establish a coverage amount after doing a personal inventory of your belonging. I always mention to look into everything...those bras and panties can be costly if you had to replace them. Think of leaving your home and coming home to nothing. What you would need to replace. Take a quick video of your place and open cabinets and drawers. Not only will this establish the belongings that you have but it can be a reminder of the things you have if a loss does occur. Sometimes we don't even know what we have so this a good rule to follow.
Receipts, owners manuals and statements from relatives or friends when a gift is given work.

CAll your car insurance people. You get a bundle discount off your auto for having renters insurance. Sometimes the dicount is as much as the policy., so you end up getting it free. I can't speak for all companies - I work for State Farm. But we suggest you go around your place with a digital camera and or videorecorder. Email that to yourself. Keep copies of any reciepts, warranty booklets, instruction manuals on new tvs, pictures of all jewelry, expensive items f clothing, etc. That way if there is a claim, we have a starting point to begin replacing your stuff. You keep all your own documentation until a claim and then you produce it to the company. If you dont have documentation, that's ok too, but it's a little more of a hassle.

I got my renters insurance through AAA. I have my homeowners insurance (for the condo we own), my car insurance and renters insurance (for our rental). They were great and it was an easy process! I didn't need to show any receipts or anything. Whoever you decide to go with will be able to answer all your questions and help you get the renters insurance that work for you. :)

They will ask you what you think your "stuff" is worth and make your premium reflect that amount. They MAY want to take pictures and they may not. Say you got 30,000.00 in coverage BUT you bought a few more things and you feel you need more than 30k to replace them, you would call your agent up and let them know you want more coverage thus increasing your monthly premium. Statefarm give a really good rate on renters insurance if you insure your vehicle with them as well.

I live in CA and go through American Bankers Insurance Company (they're based in Florida). I pay $77 every 3 months.... It just depends on how much you want to claim as personal property/liability. They do not come out to inspect your house/stuff. And there's no need to keep receipts (although I would always keep receipts for very expensive things). It's all based on how much coverage you want.

We have ours through Mercury Insurance. I think we pay about $230 a year and it covers up to $50,000 in damage. They do not come to your home.

Hi,

When I had renter's insurance, I just went through the same insurance agency I have for my car insurance (you'll get a discount because you already have car insurance with them) which was Allstate. From what I remember, the policy was based on a certain set amount of money based from square footage of my place (they may have asked me basic questions of items I owned, but I can't remember). I didn't have to show any receipts, pictures, video, etc. My place was in downtown San Diego, 950 square feet and I believe I paid around $20-$25/month - perhaps even less. I remember it being surprisingly inexpensive for the number of people who don't buy it.

The insurance company will spell it all out for you and it is definitely something you should invest in.

Best,
S.
