Hi All:
We are hoping to buy a home in Anne Arundel County by years end. We need to be near the North end of the county as my husband commutes to Baltimore. I have heard that the top 3 schools are Broadneck, Severna Park and Chesapeake. I'm thinking HS eventhough my son is 3 just because I figure if it's a top notch HS preparing for college - the Elem. and Middle curriculums would have to prepare you for a HS in that system. We moved up from TN and are having sticker shock on home prices, though. What we had down there cost MUCH less. However - you pretty much had to send your kid to private. So I want to buy IN the district with the best public education. I told my husband that since we have this option right now - we need to flesh it out. I don't want to have moved all this way and ALMOST be in the right schools - just because the home prices are a little less in the next town. Can anyone give me some feedback on schools? Thanks - S.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got some GREAT responses to the School System to buy a home in question. I have made my list and am taking your suggestions on areas to look in (even got some preschool tips). We have a few months before our lease is up so we have time to do our house shopping. Jameson turns 3 in 3 more weeks - how did THAT happen so soon?! Thanks so much - this website is AWESOME!!! S.

Living in AACo, grew up in AACo, teach in AACo - the high schools I would send my child to are: Southern, South River, Severna Park, Arundel or Broadneck. The elementary schools in these areas are good - there are others that are good too, (I don't teach in any of these feeders) This is just my opinion.

Hi S. -

I grew up in the Annapolis/Arnold area and I can tell you, those are the best schools in the county. I personally went to Broadneck Senior High and graduated back in 1986, I still hear everything is great. The further north you go in the county can get to be a little scary. I don't know if it because Baltimore City is moving down into the county, but there just seems to be trouble in the Old Mill area.

I used to commute from Annapolis/Cape St. Claire to Baltimore all the time and depending on the hours your husband is working it only took 40 minutes.

We have since then moved across the "Bridge" and from there it took about 50 minutes. The schools in the Matapeake area are good also. I have a 4 1/2 year old so we did our investigating also and have heard nothing bad over here.

Good luck in your adventure of finding a new home. I know it can be both scary and exciting at the same time.

J.

I live in the Broadneck area and I actually went to Broadneck myself. I believe the Severna Park schools are the best, however, in my opinion a more well-rounded child will come from the Broadneck schools. The Severna Park area is very high priced compared to the others you are thinking about - right down to the grocery store prices being higher. If you are looking for a home in the Broadneck area, try some of the houses right off of Bay Dale Drive - some are townhouses and some are single-family. Another place would be the community of Revell Downs (that's actually where I live). Those areas would have houses for a little less since many of the communities are on the water and of course the price then goes up. If you are looking at the Broadneck area for a house, I would suggest getting a house with an Annapolis zip code rather than Arnold. Arnold is comparable to Severna Park!
If you have any more questions about the area, let me know! I am happy to help!

Hi S., Much change is coming to the west and north part of the county due to the military re-alignment. All the schools in this county are experiencing successes, and woes. I suggest you experience the communities and their flavors to enhance or develope worldly qualities with your child as well as all the children in this county. Start with attending a Anne Arundel School Board meeting. You instints will guide you. Happy research....you will need it.
