Bunk Beds & a 2 Yr Old

I have limites space in my boys' room. They have bunk beds that we've just been using as twins (both on the ground.) My older son is 4 & my younger son just turned 2. Do you ladies think I should wait on converting the beds to bunks, or is that crazy with a 2 yr-old in the house. I was thinking I would be against bunking them until my younger guy was 3 or 4, but I think he can handle it--Noel (4) would be on top, but, of course, Finn would still have access to the ladder. Do any of you have bunks & at what age do you think it will be appropriate to convert them?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, as cramped as the room is with the two beds separate, we've decided to wait on bunking them for another 2 years or so...unless my 2 yr old does a lot of maturing over the next year or so! But now is not the time.
Thanks for the input!

My best friend is dealing woth this very issue as we speak. She has found that her daughter (2) does not focus on sleeping if the ladder is out. She continues to try and crawl on it and play with it and bother her brother who understands its bedtome and the ladder is not for playing. My friend finally decided that her daughter was just not ready for this new addition to the room and had to take the beds back down. I hope this helps you.

My bunk beads came with a warning that the child on the top bed needed to be 6 or 7.

I had bunk beds for my 2 & 4 year olds & they did just fine. The 2 year old tried to climb up on the top bunk once & got scared & never did it again. My 4 year old never fell off & no one abused it in any way. I think it just depends on your kiddos & what they are ready to handle.

My 4 year old is still recovering from jumping off the top of her brother's bunk bed. She had been told several times not jump but she did it anyway. She had a spiral fracture of her tibia (lower leg). The doc at Children's said that she was the 6 th kid that day who had the same break from jumping off bunk beds. I don't know if he was just trying to make us feel better or not, but we are a lot more careful with the bunk bed now. Good luck.

That is a tough one, especially because you have 2 boys (I have girls in bunk beds, and they arent as known for climbing!!)However, for my own peace of mind, we always took the ladder down when my oldest was not asleep in her bed. She was not allowed to play on her bed during the day, and had out grown taking naps, so we removed the ladder so that no one could get up there. We normally put the youngest to bed a little before the oldest, so when the oldest went to bed, the younger one was hopefully aready asleep, and was not tempted to climb the ladder. It just went in my room during the day, and it stayed that way until the yougest was about 4. Good luck!! ~A.~

I think it really depends on your child and if you think he can handle it. One of my nephews at age 2 got on his brothers top bunk bed and decided he would use the fan to climb down. He jumped to the fan, hung on it, and then fell to the floor.... and not I am not making it up. He was okay, the fan however was not. This was not his first or last attempt to get jump from the top bunk; but please realized that my BIL & SIL don't really supervise well (or at all). In conclusion I will emphasize that it really depends of your child, but I thought I should mention the above story. Good luck!

My son has bunk beds that the ladder is built in, no way to remove it. He was about 2 1/2 when we got it. He likes to climb up and play, but doesn't like to stay up there to sleep. So, I think they'd be fine. Of course, you know your boys, but mine would climb anything and has no fear and we still went for it.

I have two of my boys in bunk beds and they are 5 and 3 one year older than your two. I don't think I would have started any younger because of the fact that my oldest is a daredevil and my youngest tends to want to follow. We have only had a couple of occasions where my oldest has jumped off and hurt himself (yes, one time was not enough for him). So far my three year old has not tried it, hopefully from seeing that it isn't a good idea. You know how your boys are, though if it is possible for you to wait at least another year I would.
