Breast Reduction and Pregnancy

My daughter had a breast reduction a number of years ago. She's just entered her 4th month of pregnancy. In the last week she's had a bit of pain surrounding her nipples (nothing to make her go to the hospital). She has an appointment next week and has added this symptom to her list of questions/concerns. In the meantime we thought it would be ideal to poll the great ladies of Mamasource to see who else may of experienced the same thing and how they dealt with it.
Thanks in advance,
E.

No pain for me but do set her expectations that she will most likely not be able to breastfeed her baby. I pumped and pumped and would only get an ounce... The milk duct connections are just no longer there. She will get milk but it will get trapped and dry up... I feel guilty about it but remain happy I had it done despite the lack of my ability to bf.

I had a breast reduction and every month my nipples hurt pretty bad when I am PMSing - it is a different kind of pain than I had before my BR. Her doctor can check it out to make sure all is well but it is probably normal.

I had a breast reduction about a year ago, and my guess is that the pain is due to her changing nipple size tweaking scar tissue and newly connected nerves.

My nips were so sensitive for a few months after the surgery that I couldn't even ride in a car without pain...the vibration of the car would cause my bra to rub minutely against my nipples and boy, would it hurt!

Please tell your daughter that some women are able to breastfeed sussessfully after BR. Much of it depends upon how much glandular tissue was removed, and whether or not she had a free nipple graft (which severs the ducts), or if her nipples stayed attached during the surgery. She'll want to work closely with a lactation consultant to make sure the baby is getting enough milk. She may need to supplement with formula, but some breast milk is better than no breast milk.

Well, I've never had a breast reduction, but when I was pregnant WOW were my nipples SORE! It could be totally normal and have nothing to do with the surgery. I had sore breasts until about the middle of my second trimester. However, still definitely worth bringing up to her doc. Congrats, Grandma! :)

I had subtle pain around my nipples when pregnant with my first (and thus far only) child, and I have not had breast reduction surgery. I just thought the pain was part of the transition.
