Bottle to Sippy Cup
Hello!
I am looking for some tips and tricks to transitioning from the bottle to the sippy cup. My 16 month old is extremely attached to his bottle and it has been challenging to even get him to take the cup. Any ideas?
So What Happened?™
Thank you everyone for your responses! I tried the Nuby sippy cups that several of you had mentioned. He immediately took to it, and I think we are well on our way! Woo-hoo! Thanks so much for all your advice.

Well my daughter was really attached to her bottle too and what I ended up doing was switiching from the bottle to a sippy cup with a softer nipple like the bottle then when she got used to having that for a while I switched her to just a regular sippy cup and she did great with that.

Hi C.,
I too have heard this before from my baby girls!! (10 & 4 now)
The best cure I know is this......fill the bottle w/ something boring like water or a beverage he doesn't like, fill the sippy cup w/ the absolute favorite drink and let him make a choice. It kind of gives him the sense of making his own decision and not doing what mommy wants at all!! Just leave the choice up to him! Set it on the table explain he has a choice, but don't refill the bottle, leave the cup full & in sight. The key to this trick is to STICK TO YOUR GUNS, always fill the bottle w/ not so good and the cup with the favorite! After time even if he chooses the bottle keep filling it less and less, but make sure the cup is always full, when he starts to choose the cup more often then not, hide the bottle! It may take a week but if you don't make a fuss over it eventually he should be weened!! GOOD LUCK

I started introducing the sippy cup right away at 6 months and it was very easy. At his age you might have to just go cold turkey with him and suffer for a few days. Ge rid of that bottle. If this is not your style then I would try the transitional cup. Walmart has them . It is shaped like a sippy cup and has three different rubbery tops.....a nipple, a sippy and a sport top. Start him on the nipple and just get him used to the cup then switch the top to the sippy one and see how he does. The sooner youget rid of that bottle the better. Pediatrition say to start the sippy cup at 6 months so try the your new baby earlier. Hope this helps

I did not have too much difficulty with my son. However, a friend of mine did....she ended up cutting holes in the nipple and telling her son that they were broken....they then threw them in the dumpster outside together.....and made it exciting to use the big boy sippies...
Good luck!

I actually just got a cup from Walmart I think it was that had a soft nipple (like a bottle). The brand is Nuby. It also had big handles to grab and it has a top to cover the nipple. Maybe that will be easier because it's the shape of the cup, but soft like a bottle. Good Luck!

You might want to try using a cup and straw instead. My daughter was having the same problem and she figured out how to use the straw very quickly. She felt very grown-up! They sell reusable cups and straws at Target and Babies R Us by First Years.

They have these soft topped sippy cups at Walmart called Nubys ( I think that is how you spell it). They have some that are in a package with 3 different tops to them so they make it easier to transition them to cups. My daughter loves them and they were much easier than anything else I tried. Hope that works.

My son was 2 when he went off his bottle. He was extremely attached. My husband and I did the cold turkey way. He's our 3rd child so this was new for both of us since our other 2 changed over easily. While sleeping Friday night I threw out or hid all the bottles and bought all new sippy's and when he woke up on a Saturday I took him to the cupboard where is sippy's were and told him the bottles are gone-gone and we have big boy cups. He did well exempt at nap time but with some patients and alot of cuddling & holding over 2 days he made the transition. He has been bottle free 2 months and no mention of a bottle. It was a little rough but he did great now he gets chocolate milk in his cup I never let him have it in his bottle.
Good-Luck

Maybe you could take him to the store to pick out his own special cups, so that he is really excited about them and wants to use them???
