So What Happened?

Thank you all, I ended up buying the Graco Highback TurboBooster since it's to be used in his dad's front seat work van since he has no other vehicle and I didn't want my kid to ride without at least a high back booster when he's with his father, since he's still little. For my own minivan I still use a 5 point harness and I think I'll continue to use that for a while longer, but this one can be used whenever he needs to ride in someone else's car.

Well. It's really not quite that simple.

As it stands, the LATCH system has a weight limit and even though there are seats sold which anchor in that SAY they have weight limits up to 110lbs, they fail to describe that the LATCH weight limit is 65lbs on the lower anchors (child and seat combined). Once the weight limit is reached, you are supposed to detach the anchors and use a seatbelt with the booster. To do otherwise can cause injury to the child. In a crash, the booster moves with the child, cradling him and preventing the seatbelt from taking all of his weight.

Here's some info about LATCH. http://saferide4kids.com/latch-weight-limits/

Here's a good seat that would work. http://www.amazon.com/Evenflo-Maestro-Booster-Seat-Wesley... I'd keep him in a 5-point harness as long as you can (he can gain another 15lbs or so), and then remove the harness assembly, detach the anchors and be sure he's properly restrained using a lap/shoulder belt instead of the 5-point harness.

Good luck!

I don't know of an booster that will be less than $100 for the options given, but you might want to look at http://carseatblog.com/29504/graco-4ever-all-in-one-carse... - my sister has two for her kids.

We went with the Frontier ourselves, but there are a lot of options out there. I suggest a high backed booster, even if it's not a harness, and make sure that if it's not a harness that the seatbelt fits him right and that he can stay upright in it. Some kids wiggle out of seatbelts and they become less safe. You might also ask your local seat inspection place what they recommend.

ETA:

Ohio requires children to be in a booster til they are 8 so for anyone saying "Oh, it's not necessary", yes, it is. From a safety as well as legal standpoint. States vary. Know your state's laws and the laws of states you commonly travel through. Please do not be dismissive just because your state chooses not to go with higher enforcement.

http://www.healthy.ohio.gov/vipp/cps/Child%20Passenger%20... - for the original poster, there are some additional links you may find helpful regarding when to move him from booster to lap belt only, especially if he often rides in someone else's vehicle.

High back booster with 5 point harness. He is small. Prices vary. I got one for under $100 because it was just used once a week.

Any booster is fine. The purpose of a booster is to make him tall enough so the seat belts will fall across his chest and not his face or neck.

They have them at Walmart for $15 - $30. The tall back ones have anchors on them I think. Otherwise just remove the straps and buckles and use the car seat you have?

In Oklahoma our kids don't have to be in car seats after age 5.
