I am looking for book suggestions for my 14 yr old nephew. He has read all the Harry Potters so that one is out! He is an avid reader when the book is good, he likes adventure, mystery, some science fiction, etc. He is an average student, into sports and video games, pretty typical as far as teenage boys go, at least in my opinion! Any suggestions would be great, thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up giving him money, and after some time looking around online I ended up getting him Friday Night Lights, I am the Cheese, and Night (by Elie Weisel). All good books, and all different from each other so he will have some variation over the summer. Thanks everyone!

Go to the book store and ask them for suggestions. They have always been helpful in helping me find books for my 11yr old niece.

K.,

I personally love the "Odd Thomas" series by Dean Koontz. it's not too mature where it will be a hard read either. it's adventurous, and mysterious, and a little fantasy wrapped into one :)

my favorite was "Forever Odd".

When I had a commute, I would listen to the book on CD in my car.

My child is too young to read yet, but my husband likes the same types of books as your nephew. He loved the Eragon book series, which he said was much better than the recent movie. The best part about these books (about a boy raising a dragon) is that they were written by a teenage boy...I think he wrote the first book when he was 15 or so.

*I know this post makes it sound like my hubby likes to read kids books :) He actually loves to read everything under the sun and he is an elementary school teacher too.

K., I am late in sending this note. I was bored tonight lol and just looking thru different areas and your note caught my eye. I have a 14yr old son. He reads everything he can get his hand on. But these are what he suggested when I told him your boys interests. he says check out gregor the overlander series and the ranger series he is currently also reading the 39 clues series (thats a series of 10 books) we are all reading the titans books also by rick riordan. his current series is the warriors. they all have adventure, mystery science fiction and some magic.

If he likes adventure/ science fiction try:
Redemption of Althalus- by David and Leigh Eddings.

Also David Eddings has a few series':
The Elenium - 3 books
The Belgariad - 5 books
The Mallorean - 5 books

To be read in that order. The last is an offshoot from the second. I have read all of them and none are too advanced or "sexy" for a tween, they also spark imagination like no novels I have read before. David Eddings is hands down my favorite author in the Sci-fi genre. Somewhat romantic, though not racy, but packed with adventure and lessons of honor, honesty, and empathy. Oh and they throw in lots of monsters, magic, dragons and trolls...and sword fights. Not gory though. If he likes Harry, these will be right up his alley.

The only thing I'd add is try the library. I worked in one for 5 years and the biggest complaint the librarians had is that everyone was afraid to ask them questions. The librarians love to help people find books they'll love.
Ours will answer questions over the phone so you don't even have to make the trip.
Good Luck!
