I am having a small birthday get together for my son (he's turning 6) at our house. I am doing it on a Saturday from 2-4. We obviously will be having cake and ice cream. My question is, would you provide some sort of snack too or just let the cake and ice cream be enough?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all your input ladies. I think I am going to do some snack mixes in little cups. I really like that idea!

We just went through the same situation for my 5 year old. We put together a snack mix in little cups and had them out on the table. They kids definitely wanted/needed something to munch on. Making snack mix is one of my son's favorite things, so we had fun picking out the ingredients and mixing it all up.

T.,
The time of day certainly does not indicate there will be a meal...IF you wanted to put out something else, I would say popcorn or some pretzels. Otherwise, cake and ice cream is just fine.

I agree with Laurie A. It's after lunch, the party's short, you're not obligated to provide anything else.

However, it's easy to provide a little snack if you feel accommodating.

I don't think any type of snack is necessary.

you definitely do not need to serve "food". but maybe put out some bowls of pretzels or popcorn or goldfish crackers and keep a tub full of ice-juice boxes-bottled water.

Cake & Ice cream, period. If it would help ease your mind just state in the invite that "Cake & Ice Cream will be served" and leave it at that. I seriously doubt it will be an issue :) Have a happy bday party!

I always do a little something more- just so people have something to snack on while other people are arriving and presents are being opened. Nothing big- chips and dip, veggies..and of course drinks.

cake and ice cream are more than enough, given the size of today's children.

I have noticed that some kids are not allowed to have those kinds of sweets, some kids and adults are diabetic, etc. So, consider a fresh fruit tray and cheese cubes with crackers and nuts as their pre-snacks and during cake time snacks for those who need it.

So many times, I am rushing to get the present, get it wrapped, get gas, and find my way to the house so I miss eating lunch. Also, eating all that sugar on an empty stomach can give you a bad headache and/or make you very ancy, and then tired. So it is good to throw in a protein type snacks and healthier choices.

One other consideration, please don't get the cheapest cake you can. If it is dry and the frosting takes like a mouth full of sweetened lard, then your guests may resent spending their day to help you have a successful party and then be forced to eat that. If you notice a lot of uneaten cake on their plates, learn from ithat next time. That usually happens with white cake, and white or colored frosting combinations.

I would probably have a bowl of pretzels or some fruit, cheese and crackers, etc. sitting out available to the guests throughout the party. You don't have to have a huge spread just one or two kid friendly snacks to keep them satisfied until it's time for the cake and ice cream.

Good luck,
K.

I think if you did some chips/pretzels and maybe a veggie
tray and beverages that would be acceptable
your time frame is great so you dont have to provide
a meal.

I would do a fresh fruit/veg tray with some crackers and cheese cubes. Keep it simple so you can enjoy the day also!

I agree with most of the other responses. It's a short time-period and it's AFTER lunch so cake and ice cream is plenty. If you put "cake & ice cream" in your invites, that's what your guests will expect. If you feel like you want do have something else, snack mix is always a hit.

I have done parties for my daughter from one extreme to the other and, in my experience, no one really comes for the food. They come to help celebrate your child's birthday and for the children to all have a fun playing with their friends for couple of hours.

It is not your responsibility to account for the possibility that one of your guests may not have had lunch, etc., etc. If you're on a budget, stick to it and don't feel guilty about it. And please don't worry about what you've paid for your cake. That is also NOT the centerpiece of your party; YOUR CHILD is. Just focus on making it fun for him and have a good time doing it. Everything else will fall into place.

Good luck and happy birthday to your son!

I am also having a b-day party for my daughter Sat. (she is turning 10). I am having cake and ice cream but I thought I would also have a pinata....(1) to give the kids something to do & (2) to give them a "treat" to take home with them.

Maybe just a few appetizers and something to drink while you wait for everyone to arrive, for the kids.
