Birth Control Suggestions? - Carrollton,TX

I go for my annual this coming month, and I know that I'll be speaking with my OB GYN about birth control. I recently had a baby this past March, and am still in college and would not like to have a another baby until I am done, probably within 3-4 years.

Right now I'm on the minipill since I was breastfeeding and I am horrible at remembering to take it. So I rather not to the regular BC pill.

I was considering Nuvaring, the patch or an IUD....what are you experiences with all or any of these? How did they make you feel? Did you have any weight gain?

Thanks so much! :)

What can I do next?

I have an IUD, Mirena. LOVE IT!! You can still have more kids after an IUD is placed and it's good for 5 years. I have had no problems with it!!

I can see from the other responses that people love the Mirena IUD. I had this a couple of years ago. Because you've had a child, you shouldn't have the insertions problems I did. I had heavier and longer periods for a few months, but after that they were basically nonexistent. I only got to leave the IUD in for about 6 months or so because I kept getting ovarian cysts with it.
You really aren't going to know how much you like it or how it works for you unless you try it.
I did love it, but I didn't love the cysts.
Just thought I'd share my experience with it!

Nuvaring worked great for me- no side effects, easy to use, no long-term comittment, can't even tell it's there and no forgetting to take your pill. I wouldn't imagine your side effects would be any different than what you'd have with the pill. You could always try it & get an IUD later if you're not pleased with it. A lot easier than the other way around!
Good luck!

I used the nuvaring and had no issues. I have a friend that used Mirena..she had migraines and a lot of issues~ Check carefully b/c I think some of the UIDs contain hormones. Everyone is different and their bodies respond differently. Good luck finding what works best for you.

I was on nuvaring and I really liked it, but my body wouldn't adjust well to it (it was working great as far as a birth control goes, but my periods were twice a month). I think my issue is just freak thing. I decided to just quit and try for our 2nd baby and I simply didn't have any more periods- it took no time at all to get out of my body-we were pregnant immediately, so it must have been working while I was using it. I will likely try it again after this baby is born- it's super convenient.

I got the Mirena IUD placed after my second child was born 16 months ago. I have had absolutely no problems with it at all! I had little pain at the time of insertion and had just a few cramps afterwards. I did spot for about the first 6 weeks, but that is normal. My periods have also lightened considerably.

I use Natural Family Planning (CreightonModel.com) It's more effective than any artificial contraceptive and it's safer and healthier. It works! I can't recommend it enough.

I started using the Nuvaring right after it hit the market and love it. I did not experience any side effects at all and the only thing I do not like about it is the price tag:-(

Hi A.,
I only skimmed the other responses, but MIRENA IUD!!!! I had one between my kids (who are 3.5 yrs apart) and never had a period and just loved it. In fact, even though my hubby had a vasectomy and there's no chance of pregnancy, I'm seriously considering getting a 10 year one so I don't have to deal with my period (it has gotten really heavy and frankly I see no use for it anymore).

There was no weight gain, no funky hormonal issues. There used to be a great video about Mirena on their website. You might google it. It tells you how it works and stuff.

My son (kid #1) was a BC pill baby, so I wasn't going to mess around with that ever again!! When we were ready to have #2, I had my Mirena out and the next month she was conceived.

Good luck!

Good morning, A.,
My daughter tried the Nuvaring and did not have a good experience - weight gain, mood swings, etc. Some people tolerate artificial hormones better than others, so be sure to do your research before you try anything. I would contact a good midwife or birthing center and ask what they recommend. You want to be safe and healthy as well as not get pregnant.
Good luck!

I have the Mirena IUD and love it except that I did gain 20#. I am trying very hard to take the weight off now. It did pinch a bit when it was placed, but not bad at all. It is great not to have to worry about birth control for 5 years!

Although I am also currently on the mini pill bc I'm nursing, I second Erika. I loved the ring. No side effects whatsoever.

Make sure you research the side effects of the Nuvaring. I also had a hard time remembering to take my birth control pill, however, I don't forget anymore b/c I take it at night before bed. Just keep it next to your toothbrush and your won't forget.

I had Mirena iud and loved it! I got it 6 weeks after my 1st son was born. It didn't hurt to have it inserted (just very mild menstral like cramps for a couple minutes) or removed (didn't even feel it). I had very light spotting off/on for about 5 weeks after having it put in, then no period at all. I'm 7 months pregnant now, and I'll definitely get it again after I have this baby. The best part is not having to remember to take pills, or go get shots, or worry about birth control at all until you have it taken out!!

IUD without a doubt . . . Its cheaper (only one copay and your done for 5 years or until you are ready to have it removed). You never have to remember to do anything (I always forgot to take the pill). And best of all, you should have either a very light period or not at all.
I had an IUD after my first child and never had a period. I kept it for 3 years, had it removed and was able to get pregnant within 3 months with no problems. I now have another IUD and this time I have a period every couple months but it is so light that I only need a pantyliner for a day or two. I love it!

I would for sure go with an IUD!!!! My 2nd child was a birth control baby! And my 1st was only 10 months old when I got PG again!!! I have the mirana ( sorry I probably spelled that wrong ) I have NOT heard good things about the Nuvaring so I didn't even ask about that! But.... So far so good! For me it was very uncomfortable when I got it but when Is going to the GYN comfortable? And there is not extra hormones so you don't have to worry about weight! But I would keep in mind that all iud's do react differently with each personal body, so know your facts. Its been great for me and my hubby and I are far from careful in the bedroom. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I belong to a local moms group and many of the moms here are very happy with the mirena. I would have tried it but I wanted something more permanent so I opted for the essure. The mirena from what they tell me lasts up to five years with little side effects. Hope this helps.

I recently got the Merina IUD. I love the fact that I don't have to remember to take a pill every day. That was my hardest thing about being on the pill. When I got the IUD it was very painful...almost as painful as contraction pains. But it didn't last too long. I did have light cramping and some back pain for the first month. I am still having light spotting on a daily basis but nothing that I have to wear coverage for. I have experienced some tenderness in my breasts, but I am not sure if it is because of the IUD.

It has been a little uncomfortable for the past month but I am very hopeful that the side effects will wear off soon.
