Hello, I have some birth control questions, and did an internet search and this popped up. I am 25 and never had a child. I have been on a birth control pill since I was 18 and have never been good at remembering to take it. I have recently decided to take my life in a new direction. My boyfriend of 6 years and myself are planning on traveling, and NOT becoming pregnant is more important now, so I want something more permenant. I have been looking at Minera and Implanon information and have decided that one of the 2 would be best for me. Does anyone have any input on which may be better?? I read that Minera could fall out in women who have never had children, how likely is that? Is there any sexual side effect, weight gain? I have read in different places that it does and does not cause sexual side effects and weight gain, so i'm somewhat confused. Any input from actual useres of the products would be awesome! Also, I have no health insurance so the cost of implant is out of pocket, is one significantly cheaper?? ANY advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sorry I don't have any personal experience with the mentioned above birth control methods but I just had to say GOOD GAWD people!!! She didn't ask you opinion abuot her decision to have pre-maritial sex!!!!!! YES it is true that sustaining from sex is 100% effective. YES it is true that condoms prevent from STD's and pregnancy but not always.
Give the poor girl a break at least she is trying to be a responsible adult and take matters into her own hands to protect herself from pregnancy. If she didn't want the pregnancy but didn't do anything to "prevent" then everyone would shoot her down for that. Now if you two are not in a serious relationship then yes by all means demand that a condom be used for your safety but if you two are planning on travelling together that leads me to believe that your relationship is based more than just sleeping with one another. Girls, women, whatever give her a break! She asked about the form of Birth control mentioned above NOT about judging her having pre-maritial sex!
My friend uses the Paraguard and loves it and had no issues other than bleeding for the first couple of months but that has since subsided. That is all I know about IUD's though. Just do your research and I'm sorry for the ones here that have been harsh-especially to a "newbie" doesn't make a very good impression of this website. Just know you are going to get different responses here no matter what you ask and you take it with a grain of salt but can appreciate their perspective.

Men just don't "get" that ANY birth control wrecks our bodies in one way or another. The side effects of the most popular ones include (but are not limited to): mood swings, hormone imbalance, weight gain, loss of femininity feelings, decreased libido, birth defects in children after you stop, headache, naseua, breakthrough bleeding, yeast infections, dizziness, breast tenderness and/or swelling, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, and even death.

Why is it your responsibility alone? Why can't he start wearing condoms? When used properly, they are as effective as any other form of birth control - and much safer for both parties' bodies!!

It's my understanding that an IUD is a better choice for women who have already had children. I have a friend, with no children, who had the IUD inserted and she said it was so painful and uncomfortable, she almost passed out.
I also had the Mirena for two years after having my son, and while I liked it for a while, eventually the side effects were too much to handle. I kept getting ovarian cysts, and I finally had it removed. I didn't gain weight, but the cysts were painful and made me a hormonal mess. Since it's removal, I have been fine. I have had other friends who have had this, and they gained weight, had acne, and low sex drive. Of course, the doctors don't tell you these things...
Good luck with your decision.

Love my NuvaRing. My family has a tendancy to have issues with the copper IUD. You might want to check that out...

IUD's kind of scare me. I've heard too many bad things. I'm not sure how much the NuvaRing is without insurance. I have a tendancy to gain weight easily and get acne easily and I've had no changes like that. Also, my NuvaRing doesn't hurt to insert or remove. It doesn't make me a hormonal mess. And I don't have to worry about remembering it every day like the pill. I still have control over my birth control. I've been on it for 2yrs now. No Dr has to do this for me. I set the alert on my phone calender to remind me every 3wks for removal and insertion. No loss in sex drive either. : )

If you have a Dr you can trust, they'll be able to go into detail of what effects you might see... Or talk to a pharmacist. They don't have anything to lose by telling you anything in detail. They might even have pamphlets or printouts.

Good luck...

And I agree... She's an adult people. She asked about birth control.

I've had a copper (non-hormonal) IUD for the past six years and it has been great! I've never felt it since the week it was inserted, and it has not had any noticeable effect on my period - its been pretty much as heavy as it always was, no changes. If you are in a completely monogamous relationship, you don't need to use other protection.

Also, we are now thinking about getting pregnant and the great thing with the IUD is that you go in, the doctor pulls it out and bingo- you can start trying right away. It was important to me to use non-hormonal birth control for 2 reasons:

1)I was on the pill two separate times, two different kinds and both times I gained weight, felt bloated and just did not like it at all. My periods were super light, but that was about the only benefit.

2)'Female' cancers seem to run in my family and I have two cousins who are nurses who have recommended that women in our family just avoid hormonal therapies and birth controls all together. It may have nothing to do with it- but why take the risk?? I'd rather not mess with my hormones anymore than I have to!

Ask your doctor for info on the copper IUD! I got mine at a Planned Parenthood and the total cost was about $200 . Also, I agree with cash_twins below: It's nobody's business but your own what you decide to do! You're being a responsible adult, so good for you!

I have had the Minera for 7 years, and have never had any problems. I am way over the allotted time to have it in, so I would not recommend waiting that long to replace! I have 2 children, and they say it is best for women who have had kids, I don't know why.....

Im taking the pill, and i havent seen any gain weight!!! Almost all the bc pills or any type of bc causes something!! But it also depends on the body system of the person taking them!!! I agree with -rachel d.- he should start wearing a condom and may i suggest he used the one with the spermicide!!! Yea it wont feel the same but it could help you not get pg!!! Now if you dont want to get pg another thing i may suggest is 100% abstinence!!!!!!!!!!!! =)
