Hey moms! I need some advice on different birth control options that you have used. I am a mother of two and just had my second baby 9 weeks ago. I have always been on the pill however it has always made me gain weight so I am looking into different options. We are unsure if we are going to have another baby yet. I get really heavy periods and cramping when not on the pill so that would be the only reason why I would want to go back on the pill instead of trying something else. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

Different pills do different things. I've been on many pills. Figures that I can't remember which one I was on when I was breastfeeding...but I went off of it when my twins were about a year because I wasn't breastfeeding as much anymore and my doctor figured the risk to them was minimal. I then switched to the generic of Loestrin which is Microgestin...just remember that not all brand names or generics are the same. Some cause hair loss, spotting, lack of sexual desire. I've had pills completely take away my sex drive...Microgestin didn't do that. So, you may want to consider all of your options and talk to your doctor about which pills are less likely to affect your appetite (I believe the ones with more estrogen cause appetite increase).

I LOVE the Nuva Ring too...it's easy to use, convenient, and I and my husband never feel it...like someone else said though, you can't use it if you're nursing...
I tried Depo in the past and it caused me and a few others I know big problems...
There is also something I found at Walgreen's that is called VCF (Vaginal Contraceptive Film) that we just tried and liked...

I like the Mirena! I've had it twice now and I'm really happy with it. I barely have a period (although the first 3 months are a bit wacky) and you can keep it in for 5 years, you can also have it taken out any time you want. You'll probably hear some horror stories about it, but I think it's true for anything, so I'm a fan and encourage you to look into it!

try the nuva ring. i LOVED the nuva ring. It was awesome, however, it is not an option for breast feeding moms. I am not sure if you are nursing. If you ARE nursing than you can get the depo shot.

Nuva ring, check it out. It only goes where it is needed, you can take it out for a little while if you need to during intercourse and he feels it, most don't even know it's there.

I like Mirena also. This is my first one. I had it put in at my 6 wk visit after baby #2. It did not hurt to have put in. I bled for a few days and that was it. I am breastfeeding so I have not had my period yet. I know that some people stop having their period altogther after the first year or so...I am hoping that I just skip that time while breastfeeding and never have to have my period at all on Mirena. I was worried to get it at first because of all the bad stuff you hear. I figured I had a 50/50 chance of being great or a disaster. I'm glad it was great for me.

Sounds like you're in a rock and a hard place. Hormones shorten your period and reduce cramping... but also make you gain weight. I'd 2nd trying a direct hormone application (nuvaring or Mirena). Since Mirena is so expensive, I would personally go for Nuva first to see if it effects your weight. Both have all the standard "fails" of BCPills (doesn't work on antibiotics, has a "waiting period", etc.).

I have the copper IUD (paraguard), but your period goes back to "normal" on it... which sounds like it's something you want to avoid.
