My son turned 5 this week and he is almost 40 pounds! Woo hoo! Anyway, what is the best booster seat? We have the Britax car seats and like them. Is there a better brand for the booster seats? Also, I dont really know if I am supposed to get one of the booster seats with a back on it or one that they just sit on with no back on it. Thanks for any help!

What can I do next?

My advice.....don't move him from the 5 point harness. No need to (unless he is truly outgrown the car seat you have now). Keep him in there as long as possible. It is so much safer. If you have to move him to a booster, definelty one with a back. The head positioned is necessary and much safer too.

Once you graduate from the 5 point harness the booster is nothing more than a seat belt positioner. It raises your child up so that the belt hits them in the proper position. My girls were always on the tall side so we used the backless boosters. I'm not sure one is much better than another.

We love our Recaro Vivo. We also have a Britax Parkway, but it's just not as good/nice/sturdy - so we only use it when we travel (it's a lot lighter than the Vivo).

We are still in the 5point harness and my daughter will be 5 next month and is 44 lbs and 44 inches tall. We have her in the Britax Frontier 85. I just feel it's the safest option.
However, her aunt picks her up from school a mile away and for her car I got the Graco highback booster. I like it. It's small, light, and seems very well constucted.

We recently made the move (also from a marathon). She's almost 6 adn 47".. it was time. I bought the Graco with the back and love it. Both my hustand and I work for autoinsurance companies... they all pass safety standards so they are all "safe". However, I felt better with one with a back as it does hold the seatbelt more securely and it can't get into the wrong/unsafe position.

I agree with the person who mentions it's really just a seat belt positioner. I remember researching these when our oldest could move to a booster and there wasn't much of an advantage to the high-back safetywise; it's more a matter of preference by the child.

Congrats on the big move to the booster! You're going to love it. So much easier to switch between cars.

A seat with a back is definitely safer than a backless booster. My son has a Graco High Back Turbo Booster and we are very happy with it. However, that is not his every day seat and he only uses it when he goes somewhere with a friend or grandparents.

For every day, he sits in the Britax Frontier. It converts from a 5 point harness to a booster, than to a backless booster. My son is also 5 years old. He is approximately 45" tall and 47 lbs. Being harnessed is much safer than riding in a booster, so I am happy with this as his every day seat.

My daughter stayed in the marathon for as long as it was safely possible, height and weight and age recommendations are only a minimum. After a car accident (new carseat time!) we moved to the britax frontier. My 7.5 year old is also in a frontier still.

Booster seats provide safety for children who are in between car seats and seat belts, and are meant to be used with lap/shoulder seat belts to provide a better seat belt fit. Many states now require booster seats for children up to age 6 and 60 lbs, or 8 and 80 lbs.

Please consider that fact that an "upgrade" in carseats is actually a downgrade in safety. I would definitely go with a highback booster seat. Such a small child still needs side/head protection. We have the Britax Parkway for 2 reasons: 1. It has the "secure guard" feature. After your kid buckles the seatbelt, a crotch strap slides onto the regular seatbelt. This prevents submarining (sliding under the seatbelt) in a crash. 2. It also has LATCH. This helps stabilize the seat during a crash so the seatbelt is doing it's job instead of also working to hold the booster seat in place, but it also keeps the seat from becoming a projectile during a crash if the seat is unoccupied.

height and weight limits: 38" - 63", approximately 40 - 120 pounds
