Best Birthday for Husband

My husband's birthday is a little over a month away, and I want to make it the best one ever. Last year I was about 6 weeks pregnant, sick & miserable, and I FORGOT his birthday. He wasn't upset, but I really want to make it up to him this year in a big way.

The only thing he's asked for is the P90X workout system, but it's pretty expensive (with the equipment and diet supplements, etc.) and I'm not sure he'd have the time to really use it. I've been trying to find a cheaper alternative, or I may just get him a gym membership.

I also need idea for surprises throughout the day. We live in a pretty rural area, so there's no singing telegrams or anything like that. I might be able to have a cake or something delivered to him at work, or just take it myself. I was going to put something in the newspaper but we only subscribe on weekends, so he wouldn't see it on his own.

I'm considering getting his coworkers in on some kind of elaborate surprise, but if it's going to be big I need to start working on it ASAP. My husband has a great sense of humor, nothing would be too cheesy.

He also loves sports, but if I got him tickets to something he'd have to go with a friend while I stayed home with the kids.

I'm open to any & all suggestions!

Edit: He heard about P90X on the radio and liked the sound of it, we knew nothing about it except for that ad. While researching it, I found a P90X "readiness test" and he couldn't do it, so I'm looking for something similar but a little less extreme. Also it says you have to commit to working out 6 days a week to see results, and right now he only has time to work out 3-4 days a week.

I haven't ruled out sending him to a sporting event, but I don't want him to feel like I'm saying "happy birthday, now go away." haha

What can I do next?

Just my two cents, but if you have the money to spend on things like singing telegrams and cake deliveries I would suggest putting that money towards getting him the P90X System since that is the only thing he specifically wants. To get him a cheaper alternative or a gym membership is the equivalent of you asking him for a pair of designer shoes and him getting you a pair from Target instead and telling you that he didn’t think you would wear the designer pair enough for him to spend the money on them. If he had asked for workout gear in general it would be different, but P90X is a very specific item. Hope he has a wonderful birthday!

I think if you do a few things for him he'll totally appreciate it - it doesn't sound like you really need to overcompensate for last year in order to make him happy. He was laid back about it, so don't feel like you need to hire a blimp this year in order to make it great.

I'd definitely go with p90x...I ordered just the dvds (they were all brand new, still in the plastic) from Amazon.com for $85. It didn't come with the nutrition guide, etc., but I just wanted the workouts. The only equipment he'll really need will be hand weights and a chin-up bar (maybe the push-up bars too if he wants those but they are optional; he can do push-ups on the floor). He can probably go pick out the equipment himself once he gets the p90x system. Like the other moms said, that's what he really wants...plus in the long run it's SO much cheaper than a gym membership!

When he wakes up in the morning, tell him happy birthday right away...maybe get up and make coffee and breakfast for him. I think the idea of bringing a yummy cake to work is cute...and he can share it with his coworkers after lunch, everyone loves impromptu sweets at work! Then I'd just have a fun cocktail waiting for him when he walks in from work, make his favorite dinner, then give him p90x. :) Have fun!

Do you know his work well? Maybe you could enlist a bunch of his coworkers (with permission from HR) to go and sing him happy birthday on his lunch break and then read a message from you (something silly maybe, like "Roses are red, violets are blue, and a very happy birthday to you! Love X"

OK--it seems like you have two very good ideas that you've eliminated: The P90X system and tickets to a sporting event. Maybe reconsider those.
If he's anything like my husband, he wouldn't really want his co-workers involved, her prefers to keep it more personal. You could deliver a cake at lunchtime, but guys are sometimes weird about that stuff.

One year for my husbands birthday I bought one of those helium balloon compressors. I think it filled about 50 balloons. I then had them in the family room with happy birthday sign. It was really pretty funny to see my husband with all those balloons and I think he appreciated the effort. My daughters loved it too.
so maybe have the house decorated when he comes home from work??

My husband just gave me a great birthday bash. It was really low-key, the way I like it. He suggested that I invite my two groups of friends over to scrapbook/socialize for the day. He arranged for the kids to go to the grandparents and he hosted the party. He made sure the food and drinks were taken care of. It was yesterday and I LOVED it.

My suggestion would be to inform him of a party, have him send an email to the people he wants there and have them play video games (I was thinking that was what a P90X was...oops) or something while they are there. Can you try looking at craigslist (maybe post a wanted ad) for the video game system? Send the kids to a babysitter and let him sit back and enjoy his wife and friends.

I hope that was helpful!

Frankly, I'm with Keeper B. You'll probably end up spending more money putting something together when he really wants the P90X. You don't need to buy all the equiptment right away, but get him the system and let him worry about the other stuff. It's $139.80. You can bake him a cake, sing him a song and present him with his fitness program (or at least the receipt). :-D

consider P90X slightly used from ebay? they're mostly just dvds.

i agree get him what he is asking for even if it doesn't get used. don't worry about the other stuff, it sort of sounds like the other stuff might be more for you than him.
If you wanted to you could leave post it's all over his car and office. that say happy bday.

we got Hip Hop Abs... it is a great workout!

How about a bike for his birthday and you can both go for bikerides! The key is getting moving... doesn't matter HOW you do it.. and EATING RIGHT... maybe tell him you will be planning better/healthier meals.

I have been going to Zumba Classes... they are GREAT and you barely know you are working out lol

We did First Place 4 Health and LOVED it - took off 22 # and keeping it off!

Also did in the past Weigh Down Workshop and it really is a good one, too... took off 22# with that one :)

This is a totally different answer, but for my husband's last birthday, I made a list of 31 things I love about him (b/c he was turning 31). I had an artistic friend actually make the card -- it turned out great. He loves it!!!!

I used the biggest loser workout (for the wii, not sure if it is made for the other game systems). There are plenty of workout game out there now - and instead of buying brand new, you could go to Gamestop or some alternative and see if they have it used.

If buying tickets to something - don't tell him - get a sitter and surprise him that evening; and that way he can't invite a friend instead of you.

Like your question - my husband turns 35 this Decemver; new baby will be born in september, so i'd like to see some of the responses you get!

My kids got themselves a P90X system on Craigslist and like it very much! You might start looking now and you may find one at a reasonable price. It would be great to get him what he specifically says he wants.

Talk now to a friend about babysitting for a sports event for which you can get tickets, even if the event is a bit down the road (summertime, maybe). Part of the present will be that you can go along.

It could be fun if his coworkers could surprise him! I think that's great!

arrange for a weekend without the kids let them stay at friends or grandparents and spend one or two nights without any children or responsibliities.

To make it extra special get a nice nightie, bottle of sparkling cider or wine - make it like a 2nd honeymoon he will go gaga that you want time alone with him
