Best Biloxi Dog for ADHD Girls

Border Collies and Labs make great dogs. We have a border collie. She is very loving and gentle, and loves to play. She will chase a ball or frisby for hours.

I was a veterinary technician for 5 years before becoming a stay at home mom. I have chosen a Basset Hound as our family pet. He is very loveable, NEVER puts his mouth on my child no matter how rough they play, and is totally low maintenance. We brought him in when my child was 2, and he was 6 weeks. It was a great match. Since Bassets are large, my other suggestion would be a poodle. They are the smartest, most laid back dogs ever! Easy to potty train (I even know breeders who sell all their pups potty trained at 8 weeks!) In my opinion, they are companions, not dogs. That is very important to me! Someone else suggested getting a pet through petfinder or a rescue group. That sounds all well and good, but you never know what kind of personality you will be getting. And, since you already have concerns/reservations I would NOT recommend that option! For example, years ago I adopted a beautiful little mixed breed who was only a couple months old. She was so sweet and gentle. She ended up being terrified of my husband, digging up our yard, disconnecting the satellite and telephone wires (which were buried by the way) I can laugh at these things, and we've kept her, BUT this is not always something a working mom/dad can handle. It's hard to train a dog and takes a lot of time! (or money if you want to hire someone) So, in my opinion, I'd go with a poodle 1st, or Basset 2nd. The only reason I dont have a poodle in our family at this point is that we have a pet-free house due to allergies. Also, when you speak with or find a reputable breeder they can tell you with almost certainty the traits your pet will have. Hope alll this helps!

We have Maltese - They are not as expensive in Oklahoma as other states. They like to play fetch etc - but also like to sit in your lap and be petted or have their hair brushed - not sure about your girls but my daughter likes putting bows in their hair - they do have to be groomed every couple of months - but they travel well.
I know of several that are used in nursing homes due to their great personality

Hi! I know you would like a small to medium short haired dog, BUT Golden Retrievers are great with kids and people of ALL dispositions! Golden Retrievers are great dogs and LOVE kids! I work at a hospital with Therapy Dogs and most are Golden Retrievers! I would suggest you look into one of these breed because they are VERY faithful and protective and loving! I dont know much about adhd or dogs but I have a fiest. Shes between small and medium. Very short legged. She is very low maintence. I bathe her about once a month, I dont have to brush her as she is very short haired. My four year old chases her, aggervates her, Ive even seen her laying on top of the dog and the dog just lays there. She refuses to take food from your hand let alone bite or nip. Ive never seen a more layed back dog. We got her at the pound. Shes been the best dog weve ever had.

a lab is a great dog. i adopted ours from a shelter, i did alot of research and visited her several times with my girls to make sure she was the right one. in my opinion those are the best places to get an animal because #1 cheaper than at a breeders, #2 usually up to date on vaccines, thoroughly checked out by a vet (usually local like in edmond) #3 spayed or neutured. downside you don't get to see the parents and they are more than likely strays or dumped on the shelter and you don't know their backgrounds. but i've had great luck with shelter dogs. the 2 i owned previously were shelter dogs....a lab mix and a purebred....best ones ever!

I would suggest a golden retreiver because they are so easy going. I have 5 children and 1 very seviere adhd and 2 add and Cliford ( our golden retreiver) is very happy and enjoys the attention. he also helps to run off the stored up energy that the kids have

Check out this breed: Bichon Frise. This breed LOVES EVERYONE. They are especially good with kids. They love to play but also love to cuddle anytime the child wants to cuddle. I just think they have the best personalities. Bichons are also great for anyone with allergies- they do not shed. This dog should be kept inside. They are small (get to maybe 15 pounds), solid white & love to be with you at all times. Only bad thing I can say about this breed is that they do need to be brushed pretty much daily. Your girls may like to do that. Also they need to be professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks. We bought one for our year old girl & we are really enjoying her.

Rottweilers...IF raised in your home from a pup, can be the most wonderful pet in the world! I am also diagnosed ADHD and I've had over 25 years of experience with this breed as pets and show-dogs and have yet to find a more loyal, protective, playful yet DOCILE breed with children. My 14 yr. old son has been raised with at least one, usually two, rotties in our home since birth. He used to ride their backs, pull their ears, nap on and play chase with all our dogs as an infant. Now he considers them his buddies and they follow him everywhere! I have to repeat...RAISED IN YOUR HOME FROM A PUPPIE!! ANY breed can be vicious if you don't know its background, but in my experience a Rottie can be just like a big old stuffed animal that loves you back!! S.

I'd suggest looking for an appropriate pup on www.PetFinder.com. My husband and I found a wonderful dog for my son through this service. In their search criteria, you can weed out dogs that may have bad dispositions. We chose several pictures from the internet and allowed my child to choose the dog he wanted from those available. However, I would caution that you research where the shelter is before showing your children the pictures. My son fell in love with one particular dog and it was after this that we learned we'd have to drive all the way to Corinth, MS (Tennessee/Mississippi/Alabama state line) from Mobile, AL to get the dog.

Look into a pembroke corgi. We had one until we had to move (she now lives with my parents) and she was wonderful with our son and my sisters 3 kids (ages 4-12). They are extremely smart animals but also very obedient. They have plenty of energy to play and keep up with kids, but are also good about toning it down when needed.

Everyone I've ever talked to that has a corgi absolutely loves them.

are you looking for a small, medium or large dog? How much maintenance can you deal with? I have had a lot of dogs over the years. My son was very ADHD. The best dog I had to deal with him was a golden retriever. They do shed a lot so they have to be brushed daily but they are the most laid back dog I've ever owned. Poodles are good but some of them don't like children and they must be groomed regularly because although they don't shed, they do mat if not brushed daily. I wouldn't recommend a dachshund with ADHD kids because of the delicacy of their back structure.

Another option is a cat. Cats will train kids not to hurt them.

Definetly not a maltese that likes to be petted and groomed. A rough and tumble, but gentle dog are what your kids need ( if they need a pet at all until they are old enough to know that they are responsible for taking care of a pet.) Go with a medium mixed breed and spay or neuter and you will have a wonderful family pet.
