My brother told my husband and I there is a place in Kansas City that is famous for their BBQ. I asked him the name and he did not remember. We are going in a little over a week and would love to figure out where he's talking about. So if you know the area and know where it might be or have suggestions of places that are family friendly I would greatly appriciate it. We will be there from Sunday thru Thursday. We have one free day while we are there and plan to go to the zoo.

What can I do next?

Look up the rankings of the best BBQ places in the country. They will have lots of Kansas City places on the list.

Just a fair warning, it's WAY different then Texas BBQ.

I am from KC and can tell you that it is a city full of awesome bbq places. It would be hard to narrow down what place he is referring to as KC is famous for their many bbq places. Some of the most well known places include Arthur Bryant's, Gates, Zarda, Smokehouse, Jack Stack, etc.

KC as a whole is famous for their BBQ.

Arthur Bryant's is good if you like "wet" BBQ. I don't.

I enjoyed Gates' BBQ.

Google BBQ places in Kansas City. Give your brother the names. I am sure once he hears it, he will remember.

Yeah, when you are talking about KC you have to be a lot more specific than 'famous for their BBQ', there are a lot of famous BBQ joints.

I would suggest going on foodnetwork.com and searching KC BBQ.

I used to travel for work and was told by local people there were a lot of good BBQ places but that I had to try Jack Stack. I don't think you can go qrong with any choice. One fun thing to do would be to look up Diners, Dives and Drive In's and see if they have any recommendations.

I bet he was talking about Oklahoma Joes BBQ. They were just recognized as the #1 BBQ place in the Kansas City area. I personally have never eaten there, but my husband hates BBQ so we do not get it often. I love Zarda BBQ, Arthur Bryant's is okay, and I heard Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ is amazing.

I live in KC area and there are tremendous BBQ places. Smokehouse and Jack Stack are my favorites of all and never been disappointed there. They have incredible baked beans, (meaty and full of flavor).

Depending on where you are staying, Jack Stack has couple of locations not terribly far from Zoo, one is on the Country Club Plaza, (incredible array of upscale fine dining restaurants) and shopping. Another Jack Stack is in Freighthouse District by Union Station, Crown Center (There is a new Lego Land for kids) and Crossroads District, toward the "downtown" KC. Another at 95th and Metcalf. They have wonderful salads also.

Smokehouse in Independence, MO just off I-70 across from Independence Center Shopping Mall, and there is a Smokehouse in North Kansas City about 64th and North Oak Trafficway, and one in Zona Rosa south of the International Airport off Barry Road.

There is a Gate's in Independence and one near the Country Club Plaza not too far from the Zoo.

You can pull up their menu's from their websites and other locations.

Zarda has great beans as well, but there are only two locations, one in Blue Springs, MO and the other is in Lenexa, KS. Neither close to the Zoo.

Of course everyone has fries and sweet potato fries are popular now, but I don't go to BBQ for the fries.

Oklahoma Joe's has been top rated, but I think their beans are terrible
more like "runny pork 'n beans".

Gate's is okay in my book, but haven't been there in years.

Diner's Drive Inn's and Dives have featured several places in KC.

Bryant's is more of a "dive" and not in best part of town. I wouldn't take children there.

Enjoy your trip and dining!

Kansas City girl here!

Okay, here is my list and comments...

1.) Gates is the most well know BBQ here. There are several locations and you can't go wrong here. It's just good, old-fashioned BBQ. Don't be intimidated by the "HI MAY I HELP YOU" when you walk in. That's just the way they greet you.

2.) Arthur Bryant's is also good, but I find it a bit spicy- but I like the flavor of his sauce.

3.) Oklahoma Joe's is my personal favorite. They just opened a location not too far from us and I am in heaven. I'm also a few pounds heavier thanks to them. :)

4.) KC Masterpiece is the most commercial. You will see their sauce in almost every grocery store. They have closed their restaurants, but have a truck roving around town. Personally, I think their sauce tastes sweet, and I like that.

That's all I can think of for now- If I think of any more, I'll let you know. Have a fabulous time in our beautiful city. I think you will find this to be a very friendly city with so much to do.

By the way, our zoo is HUGE. Plan on comfy shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking!!

Have fun and safe travels!
