My best friend has asked me to be godmother to her new baby boy. I am completely honored! But also am separated from my husband and living at my mom's house with my 3 children. So money is REALLY tight! And I am completely clueless on what I should get as a gift for this. I know I recieved gifts when my children were baptized, but honestly nothing stands out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

What can I do next?

We always do a savings bond. $25 will get you a $50 savings bond. That is the tradition in our family.

Do you have a local religious bookstore? Or access to one on line? A cross of a boy praying to put on the wall, children's prayer book or Bible stories, etc. You may be able to find something by Precious Moments that is smaller (I know that stuff is pricey) that could be a keepsake--they may have something like a wall "plaque" (small) that is not too girly or not a figurine. Your local Hallmark or similar type store may have something as well. I still have my girls' pictures in religious/baptism type frames displayed on the shelves in their rooms. Hope that helps.

I think some small token would be nice, even just a savings bond or your "old" crucifix or rosary.

More important is sending him a card or little book at Easter, Christmas, etc. We have one friend who is already an OUTSTANDING Godfather. Not because of what he sends, but because he's always calling and checking on his Godchild" He even called on our son's Baptism Anniversary (which I even forgot) just to say hello.

I think a Godparent is more about being there than anything you give as a gift.

my niece and nephew were baptized recently and something that was nice and a bit different was mugs/ cups with the day they were born on, for example 'Mondays Child'. I bought my nephew a box set of books. Another nice gift was a Histoire d ours Teddy bear, they come in a really nice presentation box, and it wasn't expensive - look on amazon. Good luck!

A bible would be perfect and affordable. My daughter was just baptized a month ago. She received a small trinket box with a godchild saying on it, a cute photo frame with a baptismal saying on it, and a necklace. Try Hallmark stores for cute ideas.

Both my sons got savings bonds from their Godparents.

My father is a great woodworker...he made a cross for my kids as well as my GFs kids when they were baptized....their names were on the horizontal portion of the cross and the date they were baptized on the lateral part...

if you know someone who is a woodworker - they might do that for you...it's a VERY personal gift from the heart....

A Bible would also be a VERY nice thing - a child's or Toddler's Bible.
