Bank Error

I made a withdrawl from my account inside the branch on Friday and it is still showing as being available in my account as of today... What do you do? Isn't that highly unusual?

What can I do next?

It likely isn't an error, it is just that the business-day for the tellers rolled over to Monday (the 24th) so you should have seen this debit hit the account this morning (the 25th).

This is actually not unusual. The transaction is just pending, but should post as a debit within the next 24-48 hours. I have found that transactions processed inside the branch are slow. I once withdrew $400 in cash and it was about 72 hours before it posted to my account as a debit. As long as you maintain track of your balance and don't assume that you have "extra" money, then'll you'll be ok.

If you made the withdrawal at the teller, he/she would most likely have put in a teller transaction debiting the account and actual paper tickets would have (should have if that is their process) been put through on their processing side. If they did not include those tickets Friday night, they will not clear your account until this afternoon if not over night depending on when they do get to processing. The item may appear on your account any time today. Definitely don't pretend you never made it so you don't have the very high fees.

It's not unusual. Banks operate by what appears as two different sets of time. They have a "business day" and business hours. The business hours are simply the times that they are open for you to do business with them. A "business day" is a day between Monday and Friday, not including holidays. They are days that "business" would be posted to an account. In order for a bank to ensure that all the transactions for a "business day" post on that particular day, they have what is referred to as a "cutoff time" for that day's business. They have this time set so that they can have enough time to collect all the transactions and post them by midnight of that "business day". The cutoff time will not always be the same time that they close the doors for the day. The Bank will frequently keep their doors open beyond the cutoff time, so that their customers have more time to come in and do transactions. Any transaction done after the cutoff time would post to the account on midnight of the next business day. On a Friday, the next business day would typically be the following Monday, unless that Monday is a holiday. So your withdrawal was probably done after Friday's cutoff time and will actually post to your account Monday night at midnight. The same would be true of any transaction done on a weekend.

You did this on Friday and probably after 3:00 pm. It should show up on your account today (Monday). If it doesn't I would contact your bank. Don't totally depend on the online account records. I do know that deposits don't show up until the following business day.

If you are talking about checking your balance online, that will take a little while to appear on it, specially doing transactions on Friday. Personally, I'll keep a track of it to avoid leaving your account underfund and having to pay a fee ( around $35,00 or so) due to this very reason.

it happened to me once that after a month, my withdrawl of over $300 had not registered. I called the bank to find out what would happen if they never caught it and I had closed my account and left town, for example. They said that all accounts are audited thouroughly a couple of times a year, during which time the error would be caught and I would have had to pay back the money.

If it was after 2pm or so many times they don't show up until the next business day which would be today. If you are unsure you can always call the bank and ask them about it.
