Baby Weight Gain

My daughter is 8 weeks today. I just weighed her on my bathroom scale and got that she is ten pounds. She has been at ten pounds for about a month. I am breastfeeding and I think I have enough milk, she doesn't seem to be unhappy and she sleeps through the night. Is is normal for babies to stay at the same weight for so long? She was at 9lbs 6oz at her two week check-up. She has her two month check up next week.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Went to the doctor Monday and everything went well. Her weight was normal and she actually had gained some, 11 lbs 1/2oz. Thanks to everyone for helping to calm my fears while waiting to see the doctor.

Weighing the baby on the scale with you is not going to give you an accurate weight. If you are concered about her weight gain just take her to your clinic and ask for a weight check. I had to do this with my older daughter and you generally do not need an appointment. Make sure the clinic nurse weighs the baby on the same scale every time and that she is naked with the exception of a diaper. Good luck.

She's gaining weight from her birth weight, so I guess I wouldn't worry about it.

Just a tip, when you breastfeed, try pumping a little bit of that top milk off before you feed her. (The milk in the front (called the foremilk) is the suger and more hydrating part of the milk. Which she will need, however, perhaps she is filling up before she gets the "Hind" milk, which is the fatty and filling part of the milk. If she drinks that milk, she may start to gain a little more because it's a more concentrated thicker fatty milk.

i would guess, too, that if she's healthy & happy with plenty of wet diapers, she's doing well. home scales are really inexact, so you may find that she's put on more weight than you think once you get her to the doctor. plus, breastfed babies are typically just going to gain differently than formula fed babies.

i have to say i'm jealous too - i'm also breastfeeding my daughter who is now 9.5 weeks. i get maybe 3-3.5 hour stretches at night, so i'm super jealous of your all night sleeper! :)

i hope your appointment goes well next week!

10 pounds is about the 50th percentile for a 2 month old. Your pediatrician will map out your daughter's weight gain on a growth chart. Below is the link to the standard growth chart that your pediatrician should use. As long as your daughter continues on the same/similar curve since birth, she's happy, and has enough wet diapers, you really don't need to be concerned :)
Hope this helps! If you continue to worry about it, discuss it with your pediatrician at your appointment next week.

I would worry about it until you see the doctor. Scales can be different. As long as she is happy and content don't worry.

I am a mom who has experienced the babies who don't gain a lot and continue to follow their own curve thus grow the way they will grow. I am a worry wart and if it wasn't for my husband reminding me they our child/children were okay I would be panic stricken state.

Wishing the best to all and good luck.
Let me know what comes of things next week.

Good Luck!!

Did she weight 9 lbs 6 oz at the dr's office? There can be considerable difference between your home school and the dr scale. It would be unusual for her not to gain weight in that amount of time. But I bet if you took her back to the dr.'s scale, she has. If she seems happy and healthy, I totally wouldn't worry about it!

Hi Amanda,

I would say that it would be unusual for her not to gain some weight in a month...although it is hard to weigh babies consistently on bathroom scales, so maybe this is the problem. I'm sure that when you go to her check-up next week, if there is any problem with her weight, they will discuss it with you...and if they don't, bring it up yourself....sometimes on busy days doctors overlook the most important matters, so don't be backward.

Please let us know what you find out.
