Baby Acne? - Indio,CA

Hello Moms-
My 5 week old baby has severe baby acne (think pizza face) on face and neck. I am currently breastfeeding her.
Her dr thought it may be milk allergies and we tried soy formula exclusively for 2 days (no difference). Currently we're at 2 soy formula feedings and the rest mommy milk. So far there is no change in the acne (we're at a week now).

FYI- I've been drinking soy milk for the last 4 months. My dairy intake is little to none. I am also avoiding orange juice and bananas. I also don't drink caffinated drinks or coffee/tea. (Plus my husband and I don't have food or milk allergies). All baby clothing (mommy's shirts) and bedding is cleaned with baby detergent as well.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what has worked for them.
THANKS!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses.
Unfortunately-- We have yet to figure out what my baby is allergic to in my milk. We've stopped breastfeeding until the allergy results are in. Baby is doing just fine on hypoallergenic formula.

:)

I don't know what would work for you, but in my own experience, it goes away by itself in a couple of months. We had a similar problem, although not severe. I restricted my use of milks, tried changing my diet, put the baby on soy milk, and tried changing his baby wash as well as laundry detergent. The baby wash and laundry detergent change made the most difference (even though the acne was really only on his face). If nothing else works, just be secure in the knowledge that it will go away in time. Good luck.

My kids didn't have baby acne but I don't have a friend that didn't go through it. None of them did anything but wait it out, it will go away.

Congratulations on your new baby!!

my nephews had the same thing (they had eczema later on). what they ended up getting from their dr was a steroid cream. it also eventually went away on its own. what helps is to not use any soap on their face when giving your baby a bath. hope this helps.

I went to my six-week postpartum checkup and brought my little angel...my ob/gyn noticed his infant acne and recommended that I take the mini-pill as my form of birth control. She said that infant acne often results from a withdrawal of that hormone (progesterone) and that a side benefit of breastfeeding him while on the mini-pill is that it would clear his acne right up. And sure enough--four days later he has peaches-n-cream skin again. Not sure if this will help, but ask your doctor just in case! I should note that I eat plenty of dairy, and occasionally have caffeine (about once a week). The only change was the mini-pill, and it worked beautifully.

Just breast feed and don't worry about it- I wouldn't jump to food allergy this early unless he has physical signs that bother him. At this age he's still processing out your hormones, which is what causes baby acne. I know it's not pretty, it drove me crazy, too! Just wait a month or so more and it should clear up.

However, if you don't eat dairy, then a dairy allergy wouldn't cause him to react to your breast milk- it's not the same kind of protein, and if he were intolerant of the sugar his reaction would be digestive, not on his skin. Perhaps, and I wouldn't even worry about this unless he starts to have other symptoms, he is reacting to the soy in your diet.
