Anyone Use Cloth Diapers?

I did not use them but was considering and still am with my next one. I worked part-time and it was too hard with other people. I found a new disposable diaper called g diaper. They have a website gdiapers.com. They look great and easy.

I cloth diaper my almost one-year-old and have been using them pretty much since the beginning. I use Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers and I have been very happy with them. I would recommend them to any mom thinking about using cloth diapers. I started with 12 diapers and inserts and found that I did a wash almost every day for the first few months. Now that my daughter is older, I do a wash every other day or so. Once you get into a groove, it is no more difficult to deal with cloth diapers than disposables. Solids can be dumped into the toilet, then just throw the diapers and liners into a can (you can even buy a washable pail liner) and when you have enough for a load, wash 'em! We have definitely gotten our money's worth out of these diapers so far - even more so since I plan to continue using them for any additional kiddos. My daughter wore "smalls" for the first four months and she has been in "mediums" for the past 8 months and still has some room to grow. I used cloth diapers through a diaper service (Crib Diaper based on Robbinsdale). I'm not sure I could have done it washing them on my own. I mostly loved cloth diapers although occasionally I was driven crazy by leaking and when that happened the Crib Diaper folks were really great about helping me figure out how to pin them, whether to use diaper covers, plastic pants, etc. I think a big bonus was my daughter potty trained at 26 months and I think it was because she could clearly tell the difference between a wet diaper and a dry one. I had my first child a year ago and I considered using cloth diapers. However, I found a 2005 report that says that they are not really better that disposable for the environment. While you will be creating less garbage, the extra use of water and detergents even out the actually enviornmental affect. Just something to keep in mind when you make your decision. I do!! I have two kids, 4 1/2 and 1 1/2 and they have both been lucky enough to be cloth diapered. I love them! They are so soft next to their skin and soooo cheap in addition to the environmental benefits. I have two favorite diapering systems...either diaper service quality chinese prefolds or motherease one-size fitted diapers. I use both of these dipes with prowrap diaper covers. The motherease dipes have snaps and can be used from birth to potty-training (www.motherease.com) The pre-folds need to be secured with a snappi fastener. (weebees.com or peapods natural parenting store in ST. Paul...snelling Ave. by McCalester college) Peapods also has prowraps for sale. Their prices are fair. I used cloth diapers exclusively for nine months with my first baby (now three years old). I would highly recommend it. I never calculated the savings, but I'm sure we saved by not having to buy disposable diapers. And, there are that many less diapers in a landfill right now! There is a ton of information online. Check out Green Mountain Diapers as a start.

It's definitely worth the effort, if you have the time. It does take extra time to rinse the diapers after use, and then wash all the diapers, probably every other day. I just couldn't do it with my second baby.

I use cloth diapers on my 5 mo. old girl, and also on my son (now 3). I also chose them for environmental as well as economic reasons. I'm a devotee; I've never found it to be a burden, but it does require some commitment, because yes, it is easier to use throw-away diapers (and not think about the environmental cost).
My advice: choose good quality diapers and covers for the best results, and recognize that you may be changing your child more often, and doing a little more laundry, but it's ALL GOOD!!
I use chinese prefold diapers which are very absorbant and economical--Peapods store in St. Paul is a good resource, also myriad on-line stores can help. Your initial cost may seem high, but you will save money in the long run over disposables.
Daycares usually don't allow cloth; but you may still cloth diaper part time at home. Many cloth diapering moms use throw-aways on trips or long excursions. Mail me with any questions, I am happy to share my experience.

I have a 2 year old and I didnt use cloth diapers. But, I did babysit for a little boy who did wear them. I personally dont like them. They are very messy and you need to have a lot on hand because you will change them more often then with disposables. I like that they are better for our environment, but being a first time mom I think you may end up opting for something a little easier!

I mainly recommend doing your own research online to find the diapers that would best fit your needs and price range. There are so many to choose from out there. We use the mother-ease Sandy's diaper, and like them a lot. (mother-ease.com) At first we ordered the mother-ease one-size diaper but our daughter has always been very petite and they just did not work. When she was newborn we used kissaluvs diaper in size 0. They even had a flap to fold down for the umbilical cord.
We use a dry pail system and do a load of diapers every day or every other day. A must have is a spray hose you attach to the toilet-you can find it at cotton-babies.com. It makes cleaning messy diapers a breeze. We use tide free and clear and borax when we wash and I haven't had any staining and our daughter is now on solid foods.
When your baby starts solids (the poo will be more solid)I recommend getting rice paper liners for the diapers. then you just toss the whole liner in the toilet.
It's really very simple and not much work at all. AND we have never had a cloth diaper leak, and I hear babies that wear cloth are easier to potty train. Occasionally we use disposables for travel, and have had so many accidents. Many other mom's I've talked to say that with disposables, every time the baby poo's they have to change the entire outfit! I think washing cloth diapers is much easier than dealing with that!
