Anyone Else Have This Problem?

My dishwasher does not clean the glasses. The glasses always come out of the dishwasher with a sandy sediment inside them and I end up rewashing by hand. What a pain. Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Who needs men when we have so many smart moms around!!! Thanks for all your advise, I think I fixed the dishwasher. I followed your advise and took the dishwasher apart and the pieces were caked with old dish cleaner and sediment and who knows what else. I cleaned everything really well, then I bought the special dishwasher cleaner and ran that through a cycle. I bought liquid dish soap. My dishes came out sparkling clean. My husband was so impressed.

Have you tried using a rinse agent? That may improve things. In my dishwasher, I use the dish cubes with the red ball in the middle. They're costlier than the powder or liquid detergent but I don't need to rewash the glasses now that I use those.

I have this problem too! I have hard water but we do have a water softner and I have tried all the things listed below plus a few others, as well as taking it all apart and cleaning everywhere...nothing works? I have taken to realize that my dishwasher just sucks!

I find I have this problem if I run out of Jet Dry. As long as I use Jet Dry they come out good. We have hard water where we live.

Common problems in order of commonness/ easiest to fix

1- Make sure the disposal is run and clear
2- Check the trap at the bottom for sediment & or debris
3- Check the wholes in the spinner as well
4- Make sure the hose leading from the washer to the disposal is clear

If any of these are partially clogged... the dirty water doesn't entirely empty out... and so the heavy bits (that are kind of like sandy bits) just continue to get swirled around. Frequently, they're on the other dishes as well, but are so fine (and typically bleached transparent) that they're only visable on clear glass. And then it's obviously "eeew".

The same problem can happen if there's not enough water pressure, or if your pump is on it's last legs.

It happens to me all the time, and the only thing I have found that really works (I have tried all of the suggestions below) is to put them on the bottom rack, or just wash by hand.

Someone suggested to me to put white vinegar in the dispenser where you would put a rinse agent. Vinegar should help with hard water and phosphates. Also try using a little less detergent, particularly if you have a newer dishwasher. They are efficient enough to be able to use less nowadays. Good luck!

What is the water in your house like? This might be the whole problem-have it checked out to see if there is a leak. Or perhaps your whole town water has certain qualites that don't show till this happens...also try turning your glasses on their slant a bit see if that helps get the water and cleaner into the glasses.
