My son is 6.5 months old and used to sleep from 8-6:30 or 7 no problem. We followed the healthy sleep habits train. since he was 4 months old he has been constantly sick with upper respritory stuff. The last 2 weeks he has been waking up earlier and earlier ( 3AM) I havent seen that on the clock for months. My question is they have put him on prednisone for the last 4 days and he hasnt improved and will not go back to sleep at night (too early in the morning) and is very angry. is this from the medication or is something else going on? also he will not nap at home. He naps great at daycare for at least 2 -2 hour naps but at home im lucky to get 45 minutes. any explination or suggetions would be great.

It is not unusual for young kids to seem to be "constantly" sick. With my oldest dd, the doc said that kids get 4-5 bouts of the cold during a winter season, which does make for a long haul.

Since prednisone is in the steroid family, that may contribute to sleep disruption. I know that when I have been on steroids, it is common for me to change my sleeping pattern, and get irritable.

Another suggestion that came from my doc is to dose with ibuprofin/motrin often. If there is any physical discomfort, this should be a help.

My co-worker, when her ds was 6 months old took him to a chiropractor because of sleep issues. I don't know what they did but the results were amazing for her.

I was on prednisone in college for mono and it gave me so much energy. No one told me so when I went off it, I lost all that energy with no warning and got sick again. So I wouldn't be surprised if it's acting like major caffeine or something for your son.

Hi K.,

Prednisone is a steroid and messes with the emotions terribly. I was on it as a child and it is awful. Anger is uncontrollable unless you know what is going on and can make an effort to control it.

My first recommendation is to remove the synthetic chemicals from the house. They are toxic and they DO build up in your system. Imagine them building up in a little body like his. When I detoxed my home about five years ago, my little girl started sleeping through the night for the first time at age 9....they also mess with the respiratory system. Think about how lightheaded you get when you walk down the chemical isle at the grocery store. Imagine having tiny little lungs...

When you remove these chemicals... cleaning supplies, soaps, perfumes, laundry detergents, etc...his immune system will be stronger as well. His body will be able to fight off all the things that attack.

If you want more info or have any questions, feel free to get back to me. Detoxing can be inexpensive, it can even save you some money and it saved my sanity!

Regards,

M.

I would suggest having him tested for an allergy to either casein or whey, the two proteins found in cow's milk/products. While conventional/allopathic doctors aren't quick/don't want to acknowledge that these two protein allergies affect the mucous membranes, naturopathic doctors and others who work in the alternative healthcare field will tell you that they do.

I discovered three years ago that I am allergic to casein. Once I quit eating anything with cow's milk/cow milk products, my years of rhinitis/sinunitis went away, as did my bouts of bronchitis AND my asthma (as well as my chronic constipation). In fact, I actually quit taking my Advair medication in April 2010 and now, with winter here, I still have absolutely no signs of asthma. And I am on NO prescription drugs for asthma.

If you're breastfeeding, your little one is getting what you eat. You can experiment yourself. Stop eating all cow milk products as well as drinking milk (you have to be very diligent, as cow's milk is in everything--you'll have to switch to dark chocolate over 65% cacao to get away from milk--and even then, some companies still put milk in their products) and see how your little one does. If you bottlefeed, there is still whey or casein in the product. You might have to switch your son to raw goat milk, which you can get from a farmer. I would be very leery about soy--there are just too many "nos" for me to recommend it--and other alternative milk substitutes (almond, oat, hemp, rice) won't have anough fat and other items his growing body needs. Coconut milk is very good; not sure if it's recommended for very young babies, though. Your best bet is to quit eating the offending food(s) yourself, which will be the best way to help your baby. Chances are if he's allergic to casein or whey, he might also have other food allergies.

Good luck. Oh, if your Pediatrician or Allergy Specialist won't test for milk allergy (I'm going to guess they won't), I'd suggest seeing a Naturopath to have your son tested. That's how I had to get tested. It was a simple saliva test and cost me about $25-$30.
