Hi Moms,
A bit of a background here, I grew up with severe food allergies but have since grown out of most of them. Allergies also run in my family so I have been very diligent on intoducing new foods and on the lookout of any kind of reaction. I tried to switch my 15mo daughter over from the baby oatmeal to regular oatmeal you and I would eat. With in 12hours of giving her the regualr oatmeal she had a bowel movement that gave her a severe diaper rash and two raw spots to the point she was screaming in pain. I have never seen anything like this it was so immediate. We currently live in Central America and the local doctors are worthless in my opinion, so I rushed her to our american nurse who immediately asked if anything had been different in the last 24hrs, diapers, wipes, cream etc. I said no all that had been the same except the oatmeal. We came to the conclusion that it was the cause. The diaper rash cleared up with in three days and of course I stopped the oatmeal. My question is has anyone else had this kind of allergic reaction? Is there that much of a difference between the two kinds of oatmeal? Was it maybe just too harsh for her system to handle and not an allergic reaction? Thanks for you help!

So What Happened?

So I talked with the pediatrician and we both thought it was odd that she reacted to regular oatmeal but has been eating baby oatmeal with no problems. I'm going to try again but with a smaller amount and see if it was just a fluke or what. Thanks for your help ladies!

I would look at the brand and how it's processed to help you determine what the cause of the problem was. Does it have preservatives or flow agents? The only thing that caused that type of reaction in my daughter was acidic foods like apricots and peaches. Her system just wasn't ready for the acid. While we hate to experiment with our kids, we kind of have to when we come from families with allergies. I think you're doing the right thing introducing one new thing at a time. Oatmeal is a not wheat grain and it would be a shame if she couldn't eat it. I'm thinking it's the brand since the baby oatmeal wasn't a problem. If you can't get another brand, write home and have grandma or grandpa send you samples of different brands. Start with an organic one.
Good luck,
K.

I know some oatmeals are processed and contain traces of wheat (ie Quaker Oats). I have a friend who is gluten intolerant (not an allergy mind you), who has to eat special gluten free oats. I don't know if the infant kind is processed without the wheat. Also, was it by chance one of the flavored varieties? It could have been an ingredient other than the oats.

I'm not sure about differences between infant oatmeal and our oatmeal, but I do know that when my son was a baby, I couldn't give him infant oatmeal. It would do exactly what it did to your baby. He could eat the rice but not even the mixed as it has oatmeal in it too, I think. I am so glad her little butt got cleared up. Weird how these things happen. hugs-T.

My Mom, is allergic to Oatmeal. ANYTHING oatmeal. It does not matter what type. Even Cheerios, she can't eat.
It also causes eczema in her and skin rashes.
She has to read the label on things, to make sure Oatmeal or Oats is not in it. Even in small amounts.
My mom is also allergic to citrus things. It gives her the same reaction as Oatmeal.

All the best,
Susan
