I had to move in with my parents 10 months ago after seperating with my husband. My husband and I are now getting back together and my 3 year old is gets very sad when I bring up the move. We are moving next weekend and I have no idea how to handle this with him. He is very attached to my parents. We will be living 2 1/2 hours from them. Help please!!! This is breaking my heart at a time that should be very happy.

What can I do next?

this is a very hard thing to deal with he will miss his grandparents and his routine.Talk to your parents about the possibility of setting up regular vists for him maybe a whole weekend, Then get a calendar and mark the days, this will give him a way of "seeing " when he gets to be with the Grands again. And never use these visits as a bribe or take them away for punishment,He would noy be able to understand that,They have been a big part of his life.Kids love routine and he may just be afraid of the change, when he sees that they are still apart of your lives he will be Ok Good luck!!! If you & your parents have a computer, you can talk to each other face to face with a web cam.

show him how Skype works, my parents live far away and our kids love to skype with them and their cousins.

let him pick out new bedding to help get him excited........the idea of a webcam is good & take lots of pictures of him with the grandparents & put them all around his new room, maybe make a photobook for him to carry around & look at whenever he wants....best wishes

I've not been in your situation, but my parents live 3 hours from us and my oldest DD adores and misses them constantly! My suggestion is to just be honest about it, and talk to him about how it makes you feel to be moving - sad to leave the grandparents, but excited to be moving to a new place. Try to make things as positive as possible! Good luck!

2 1/2 hrs isn't like being in the same town, but it isn't too far for visits. Will grandparents agree to take him one weekend a month. If you meet in the middle to swap, nobody has to drive that far. And your son could get a whole weekend of special time with grandparents (and you could get a weekend of time with hubby!)

Make sure to check out the local parks, libraries, McD, neighborhood friends right away to show how great the new home is. Keep him a little extra busy for a few weeks.

Congrats on working out your marriage - that's the greatest gift you can give your son.
