have you tried Nesquick strawberry or chocolate syrup? I had to flavor my sons milk back when he was about 15 months because he started refusing to drink milk. once i flavored it a little he was fine. now he drinks it both flavored & unflavored. He's over 3 yrs old.... drinks at least one 8 oz glass a day some times more.....

Don't worry about it. There are many other forms of calcium - as long as he gets a few servings of those each day, he'll be getting what he needs. And that can be anything from Calcium fortified OJ to ice cream, yogurt, cheese, etc.
Also - try using some flavored syrup. My son would only drink chocolate milk but then we just really slowly reduced the amount of chocolate we put in and he's fine with that.
Good luck!

So funny, I also have a 14 month old son named Jake! I had the same problem with his bottle/formula. Since he was about 10 mos he started to use a sippy cup and does much better with his fluid/milk intake. I was nervous too about him not getting enough calcium.....Have you tried Yo Baby yogurt my Jake loves them and they are made with whole milk and they have a good selection of flavors so he dosen't bored with them, he also loves cheese and pudding which also has a good amount of calicum. Hope this helps, good luck! K.

My son doesn't like plain milk either. His doctor recommended the Stonyfield Farm yobaby yogurts each day, and said that chocolate milk's cool as long as he's getting milk. Cheese helps too, as do some veggies. If you did a quick google search, I'm sure you would come up with a lot of options.
If he doesn't like a sippy cup, just use a regular cup.
Warmly,
A.

haveyou tried it a sippy cup and keep introducingit. it sounds like you have and hejust doesn't want it. how does he like cheese, yogurt mac and cheese anything in form of dairy he is getting his calcium especially yogurt. i would talk to his doctor if your that concerned. how about mixing milk with a little frozen yogurttomake a milkshake oryou could try thepediasure drinks. i would check with the doctor before using the pediasure becuase that is intended for under weight kids who are trying to gain weight. i hope some of this helps.

My son did the same thing, when I stopped giving him a bottle he would gaga nd not drink any of the milk I tried to put in his sippy cup. I tried putting a small amount of chocolate or strawberry syrup in it and it made a huge difference. HE still didn't drink a ton but he drank some. My dr told me that as long as he was getting calcium other ways , like milk and yougurt and such then he was ok.
Good luck! He's 4 1/2 now and thriving just fine :)

Hi J.,
My son was not a big fan of milk either when it was time to switch. I made half formula half milk for a while and then slowly made it 60% milk, 40% formaula, and then 70% milk, 30% formula, etc. This took me about a week, but now he loves his milk. If your son does not like formula, you could try watering the milk down. As far as getting the calcium, you can give him cheese, yogurt, or even watered down calcium fortified Orange Juice. Hope this helps!

Hi J.- my daughter has a milk allergy so I had the same concern- the doctor told me the only reason for milk is the calcium it has. She then told me that there are alot of vegies that are full of calcium, like broccoli. My daughter does drink Soy and Rice milk but I also make sure she gets lots of green vegies. God Bless

Hi I hate to tell u but if you are worried about him not getting enough calcium than you may want to talk with his doctor about putting him on a calcium supplement or maybe you can start putting in some flavoring in his milk. Than just start adding a little less each time. it may transfer him back to regular milk. J.

i had a similar struggle with my 15 month old jackson, although we had to stop giving him regular milk because he obviously had problems digesting it and it flared up his reflux we still had issues. We can not even know get him to drink the soymilk out of a sippy cup he drinks his water out of it fine but refuses to drink the milk....also we had to heat the bottle as well and on our way to lowering the temperature it needs to be, i wanted to not be giving him a bottle anymore after one but decided that he needs the calcium more and many children nurse until two or later and for him this is what it is, also we intorduced it first at bedtime, so he was tired and used to getting something milk like around this timei hope this helps!

Hey J....

Not that this should be the "go to" thing to do, but try chocolate syrup...

Or maybe you can try PediaSure, which is more like a shake. Does your son like ice cream? Maybe try freezing the PediaSure a little so it's a little icy...?

Just a few suggestions....

R. :)

Will he drink OJ--- my son (now 5) absolutely refused milk (and we have a history of lactose intolerance in our family). The calcium fortified OJ, combined with yogurt, cheese, etc. worked wonders for him and my (now 3 yr. old) daughter... Our pediatrician was perfectly happy with the substitution and my kids are healthy, active, and happy -- and it was one less thing I had to fight about.

Hi I had this problem w/ my daughter she is 22 months now, I fought it for so long but then i gave in and mixed chocolate, she hated that too so then i tried strawberry quick (powder) did not add as much as you should cause I wasnt fond of the idea but now she asks for milk ! so i give her enough to make the milk pink and she is happy. I hate milk so I knew she would hate any other type of milk cause they all taste the same when you hate them! good luck

Hi J.,
Sorry you are having such a hard time getting your little one to drink milk. A friend of mine has a son with PKU, and he can't have ANYTHING with protein in it, which includes milk. So he has a special "formula" they have to use which really smells gross. In order to get him to drink is she purchases this stuff called Magic Milk Mix. They have several different flavors to choose from, maybe you can find one he likes and put it in his milk to make it a new color as well as a new flavor, but he gets all the calcium you want him too from the milk. It's no fat and very little sugar. I even give it to my kids as an alternative to white milk, they love the orange kind, makes it taste like a cream sicle hehehe. Good luck in whatever you choose to do...there are a lot of options out there. Hopefully this helps a little bit. Hope all is well other wise!

Milk is not the only source of calcium. I have Osteoporosis even though I have always consumed a lot of milk. I found out when I was about 23.

Spinach is a great source of calcium. However, I cannot stand the canned stuff. I eat it fresh in salads and sandwiches.

Go to the link below for other sources, as well as for tips on getting milk into the diet. By the way, it seems that powdered milk has more calcium than regular. I suppose that you could add this to recipes in both cooking and baking, anywhere where it says to add milk or water.

have you tried adding a little color to the milk. Let him pick what color he'd like to add to it and let him help....might do the trick( my mom did that for one of my brothers when he was young). good luck :O)

Hi, J.,

Find other foods with calcium and vitamin D. There are a lot of calcium-fortified juices out there. I'd suggest kale, too, but not too many kids like that stuff. If your son will eat foods that have milk in them (cereal, mac & cheese, cheese sticks, yoghurt, milk-based soups), stick with those, and make drinking milk an available option, but not a chore.

If your son will not eat or drink anything that has milk in it, you might want to get him checked for a food sensitivity or allergy. I was allergic to milk as a child, and I didn't like to drink it or eat cheese because it gave me horrible sinus headaches and sore throats. My doctor put me on calcium supplements until I outgrew the worst allergy symptoms around age 11.

I'm still not a milk drinker, though. My son enjoys Horizon Organic Vanilla Creme flavored milk as a treat, and he was able to transition from that to regular milk at kindergarten, even though he hadn't been exposed to the idea of drinking milk with a meal.

Good luck!

My son was also not a big fan of milk. I tried everything - soy milk, goat's milk, chocolate milk. Nothing worked. I was feeling ok about it for a while with plenty of cheese and yogurt, but still really wanted him to drink milk. I can now get him to drink it with just a little bit of vanilla syrup and a straw. It's like a special treat! I blow bubbles for him into the milk, and he likes to "drink the bubbles"! Hey, whatever works. He loves his milk now...
