Advice for Infant Always Coming Home Sick..

Hi, my son is almost 5 months old and started daycare when he was 3 months old. I knew being around so many other kids he would come home sick once in awhile but it seems like he is coming home sick at least 1 or 2 times a month with something more than a little cold. Then I end up needing to take at least one day off of work to be home with him. Then, of course, I ususally end up sick the next day or so. Any suggestions on how to keep him from getting sick as much? Staying at home with him is not an option for me since I am a single mother and need to work. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

Ugh, I so know what you are going through. I had to take my daughter out of daycare because she was literally sick for 4 months straight and I hated to put her, and me, through it. After her second bout with pink eye (and mine) and an upper respitory infection, croup twice (and two trips to the ER) three ear infections, and I was done. I tried everything too....no sugar, washing her hands regularly (even would use sanitizer if no bathroom) nightly baths, enough rest, etc. and nothing worked. What really bothered me is when I would go to pick up/drop off my daughter and I would clearly see kids sick (coughing, runny noses) and they were just passing it back and forth. Because we all have to work, you can't afford to not go, so sick kids being there was the norm. You may have no other choice then to find an in home child care provider, or a regular sitter at your home. It'll be cheaper (by almost half!) and your child will be healthier, as well as you! I did and we have not been sick once since I pulled her out of daycare back in August. seriously, within a few days she was well again and has not even had a sniffle since! Good luck!

It is disappointing when our kids can't stay well. A couple of things can help. Eliminate sugar from his diet. It lowers your immune system immediate and then continues for hours. You both will be sick less if you strengthen your immune system - good supplements along with healthy diet. I have researched companies and know which ones have undesireable ingredients in their products and which ones do not; which ones do research when creating products and which ones do not. My son was sick all the time too in daycare, until the day I decided to stay home with him (at age 4). It got a little better as he got older, but not by much - there are only so many colds out there and once you've had it you can't get the same one again....And there's no way to keep them healthy if they've not been exposed to it or have a young immune system....kids come in and out of daycare, the after school care kids bring things in from school and it gets passed around the daycare....my worst nightmare? The two times he got lice from daycare. and we couldn't get rid of it bc he would be clean and go back and get it from another child who wasn't.....ugh.

I had him on vitamins from the time he was born (he wasn't nursed) and he continues to take them - he actually is anemic now, despite our steak and potatoes diet.

OK, I'll go in a different direction than the other healthy advice and ask if you've taken him to the docotor. I know you don't want to go running there for every cold but my son seemed to be constantly sick too. Runny nose and a horrible congested cough every couple of weeks. It even lead to a couple of ear infections because he had so much drainage. A cool mist humidfier in his room at night helped but not enough. We took him to the doctor and she thought he might have asthma. She gave him a breathing treatment but it didn't help at all so she ruled out asthma and subscibed an allergy medication (Zrtec). Within a few days his runny nose and cough went away. I know it's not desireable for him to be on medicine but we couldn't do without it. Good Luck. C.

Really good suggestions here for Healthy living!

My son who is now 12 was ALWAYS sick as a baby. He went to daycare and was constantly catching every bug that kids brought in. Finally I switched hom from a group daycare to a home daycare and that helped. Less exposure for him.

We started my son on Flinstone Vitmins (just a half of vitimin) per docs order when he was fairly young. I'm not sure how young he was though, I know it wasn't 5 months. Wash his hands when you get there, and again when you pick him up and give him baths nighty. It will help with getting the bacteria off. Another thing that causes children to get sick more often is being around a smoker, even if the smoker smokes in a different room than the child is in, it stays in the air. Make sure he's eating a healthy diet for his age, starting on those veggies and fruits! They help build up the immune system.
My son seemed to be sick more than the average student at daycare even though we lived in a non-smoking home and didn't eat out very often at all. It goes around. Those kids at daycare sometimes have siblings in grade school and bring those illness to daycare. Parents send their children to daycare even though they know their sick in order to try to get at least a half day in at work. Until he builds up an immune system stronge enough to fight off some of these things he will be sick. The positive? You won't have to go through it when he gets to regular preschool or kindergarten! He will already have one of the strongest immune systems in the class...Best of luck!
