Adding Teen Driver to Insurance, How Much???

My daughter is ready to get her drivers license and we will need to add her to our car insurance. My husband just got a quote from our insurance company of $827 a year. Mind you, she has a 4.0, has been though drivers education and Alive at 25, all of which are supposed to reduce your rate. Is the rate we were quoted reasonable? We're thinking it is on the high side. We aren't adding a car, just our daughter as a driver. We have all of our insurance through this company and have only had one claim in 12 years (hail damage to the roof of our house). My husband is livid. We had an $80,000 airplane insured and it was only $1000 per year (different insurance company). We're thinking our inusrance company is out to lunch. Thanks so much.

So What Happened?

We're still checking around, but it does sound as if we are getting a better rate than most. She will occasionally be driving our family car, 2006 Tahoe, so it isn't a new vehicle. She refuses to drive the pick-up truck...doesn't drive like a car and is hard to park. We might keep her on her permit until June, and see what college plans come thru. Thanks to everyone who responded.

How long a timeframe? If that's per year, you are doing well. Be glad she is not a teen boy. We were quoted over $1K to add my stepson. Ask around, but $800 seems average for me. I believe we were quoted something in that range (have to look it up) for my stepdaughter. Teens are also usually quoted based on the newest car, too.

My quote for my son was more than that! About $240 more. I actually have two teens old enough to drive and although it was super expensive for one, it was only $4 more the second teen driver. HTH

I am in the insurance industry and can tell you, that is not unreasonable. The thing about teen drivers, it's not a matter of IF they are going to have an accident, it's WHEN. Some ways to prevent it are to tell her to always get to school 15 minutes early. So many parents think it's ok because she just drives to school and back. That's where the majority of teen fender benders happen. You put 500 inexperienced drivers all trying to get in the parking lot 5 mins before the bell rings, add a few macho guys trying to show off for girls, and it's total chaos. The other thing that gets kids into trouble is tailgating. 9 out of 10 teen accidents are from rearending someone because they "thought the person in front of them was gonna go."

Our daughter was also a straight A student. But she used her learners permit till she turned 18, but she was going out of state for college and NOT taking a car. So she was really only going to have access to the car for 3 and a half months a year and a few rentals on campus.. all of this brought the cost down. Our cars were ancient also..

We paid about $75. per month..

A year ago we purchased a brand new car, so instead of it going down, it stayed about the same.

I think it is pretty fair considering it costs over $100. per month for some of the young men we know..

Shop around.

I'm an insurance agent in AZ. The honest answer is you can't compare your insurance quote to what anyone else is paying. Especially don't ask us in AZ because after NY, we have the highest rates. Rates are based on your credit, zip code, coverages, driving records, the vehicles you drive, many, many factors. So my suggestion to you is to find a local independent agent that works with many companies and they can "'shop" around for you to see if that is a reasonable quote or not. Good luck.

Actually $827 is not that bad for a teen! Sounds pretty good... I know that car insurance for a teen is PRICEY!!!! LOL! With her GPA she should be able to get a good student discount which will help. I would also make sure she is listed on the car which she will get the lowest rates.

Time to start insurance shopping.
My son will need to be added to my insurance next year. The company I am with offers good student discounts, etc, and I really like the coverage I have now - more services for less money than my last insurance company. But, if the rate seems unreasonable to me, I will shop it out again.

It does seem high to me, but I haven't gotten quotes for my boy yet.

Shop around, get other quotes, talk to your insurance company about the rate - maybe they have some discounts that they can "find" in order to keep your business.

Good Luck
God Bless

Yes m'am... teens (even good girls like yours....and mine are expensive to insure) Our straight A honors/AP, cheerleader, our policy which is combined with EVERY policy to get discounts and it still doubled.

We did not add a car either. We had her car on standby for when she got her license. Here's our deal... We use Farmers, we got a discount because EVERYTHING we have is insured through Farmers. She also got a very small discount for grades, a discount for watching some video they requested her to watch on the Farmer's site and I signed off on it, and the discount for drivers ed classes.

Bottom line...we have 3 Mercedes. 2010 E350 (hubby), 2007 CLK 350 (mint condition, less than 30,000 miles.... daughter's car) and 2008 SL550 ( my car) high end luxury convertible that daughter has never driven and won't for a long time.

Before adding her... our insurance bill was about $1100/6 months BUT we took the discount offered and paid in full of $900/6 months.

After adding her, it went to $2100/6 months and we take the discount, pay in full of $1900/6 months.

We keep deductibles at $1000, have top of the line coverage on all cars.

You can probably get something cheaper depending on the cars you insure. We knew going in that we would at least double because of the cars we drive. They are however, VERY safe cars and we value safety for our daughter.

We could not have purchased a better, safer car than the one she drives that is an 07 in perfect condition, we've owned from day 1.

Good luck, let's hope she gets no tickets..... That would throw a wrench in our set up!

I think ours was $72-74 more a month for a girl. So glad not paying for a boy!! And ours was quoted for the newest car too, but they changed that for us (the administrative asst mentioned that in passing & said "we'll change that." ???). We went through Allstate for cars because they also insure our home.

Yeah, too bad they don't consider the grades, etc. Husband was livid too until he checked around & found others were higher. Good luck!

My daughter is 21, her insurance is still 110 a month. Sounds about right to me. She also has a 3.8 and has no blemishes on her driving record. When you think about it she has a driving record, your daughter is an unknown. She is lumped together with the driving record of every other girl her age with the same criteria.

I asked a coworker and she said they are being charged $980 more per year. When her son got his driver's license, their insurance sent a notice that their coverage was going up even though they were not going to add him. He is still a licensed driver in the household, even though he got his own car and insurance. They ended up just adding him on, cost almost the same. He took safety classes and such to try to lower it but they wouldn't until he has been driving for 2 yrs.

Sounds in the ball park - but you didn't mention what kind of cars. We added our son and daughter, and this isn't far off what we paid EACH.

Try $1000 per 6 months ($2000 per year) on for size. That's what it will cost in SoFla to add my teen driver, even without another car.

That's one of the biggest reasons he hasn't gotten his license yet . . . (he's 17).
