ACK... I've Lost the String to My Mirena!

Bit of a minor freak-out going on here! At my annual exam today, the Doc said that there was no sign of the string for my Mirena IUD. I've had no trouble with it for the past four years and was looking forward to having another one when this one expired. An ultrasound confirmed that it was in fact still there. The doc said that the only way to remove it was a D&C type procedure under general anesthesia. I'd rather not be put under unless absolute necessary (not to mention the fact that my insurance stinks and this will most likely cost a small fortune). Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions? TIA!~

What can I do next?

I know this is probably an impossibility but maybe your doc could speak with the Mirena rep. If this has been a constant issue ( such as a recall, situation) or even a low incidence, maybe the drug company would be willing to write off some of the procedure. It never hurts to ask. Pharmaceutical companies spend lots of money to keep their clients happy.

My stings are lost too. US confirmed it is in there. I am not getting mine out for a few years. BUt, I asked my friend (she is an OB nurse) how they would get it out. And she said that they can do it in office, open up a bit wider, and get it out that way. Next time I see my Dr, I will ask him about that. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

This happened to me, I had to have mine surgerically removed but it was an in office procedure. Mine was free to insert but cost $450 to have removed. I will never got another one of those.

i would ask your doctor to look again or to consider if there is another way to remove it. if not i would go to another dr for there opinion. my dr couldnt find my strings either and so a yr later when i went to have it removed, they said they would see what they could do and he had to open me up a bit larger than usual ( with the things they use for a pap smear) and he used these extra long tongs and after a few minutes he got it......
