Abruption & Premature Birth with First Child—fear of Next Pregnancy!

We have a beautiful, healthy 21 month old son who I delivered 6 weeks early due to several pregnancy complications and a marginal abruption (the placenta was detaching from my uterus). Now I'm pregnant again and so very afraid of it happening again. Dr. says my chances are about 20%. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'd really love to hear how consecutive pregnancies went—especially if they turned out just fine! I realize I can't live in fear but it's difficult. Any words of encouragement, experiences, advice, etc.?

my sister had exactly the same troubles with her first baby--she too delivered 6 weeks early--and not any of the troubles with her second one--it was clear sailing and she delivered naturally with the second one--she had to have a section with the first one--I even got to be in with her and be a coach in the second one--It is a miraculous event to deliver a baby!!!
Best of everything to you--try not to worry--if there's a 20% chance--that means there's a 80% all will be ok--
Blessings--S

IM in the same boat! Looking for women who have gone through placenta previa &/or Abruptions & got pregnant again Myself?? Im 29 yeras old & I had "Partial Placenta Previa" with my 1st son this year. Went in for my 20week check up(& to find out the sex) & they had to do a internal ultrasound to find my placenta & It was "Low-lying." They gave me the same old line, "most women's placentas are low lying at 1st but eventually move up as the uterus grows." We crossed our fingers for the next 8 weeks, went in, & Dr.Says, "Well, it moved up a centimeter so we'll go ahead & clear you.. resume all normal activity." & So I did. Nothing too strenuous, just normal everyday life. 2 days later I start bleeding (A lot) all of the sudden. My husband rusehes me to the hospital, (I'm 28weeks pregnant at this point, which was in January of this year).. I was contracting as if I was in labor & Delivering blood clots the size of lemons. Never been so terified in my life. The ultrasound showed a "Low-lyig Placenta," not complete but I guess I was having partial abruptions. After they got mostly everything under control, except for the bleeding(Bled for the next 2 weeks in the hospital) I spent 61days in high risk maternity on my back. My son was scheduled to deliver a month early because they were afraid I may go into lablor which would increase the chance of a complete abruption, which is life threatening. Anyway, during the C-section my Placenta WAS delivered 1st, they tried to get the baby out quick because he was losing oxygen, He wasnt cooperating & moved himslef sideways up near what felt like my lung/throat area, unfortunately they were forced to slice my uterus into a "T-Line" in order to have more room to grab him, they pulled him out by one leg, he wasnt breathing at 1st but within seconds he was. (Thank God). Recovery was a nightmare with that extra cut on my uterus & unfortunately within the 1st 10weeks of my "recovery" I experienced LOTS of bleeding, underwent a UAE(Uterine Artery Embolization) to try & stop my bleeding, then finally did a D&C & they found a polyp on my Uterus.I became very ANemic & my bones have since becomome very weak as if I were 90 years old. I REALLY want another child but am terrified to get pregnant & was wondering if anyone out there has gone through any of this(Previa,Abruptions,T-line uterus cuts, UAE, etc...) & Proceeded to have a 2nd child & how that went?? Thanks..

My 2 year old came 5 weeks early due to an infection and repture of my membrances(sp) TMI maybe. Then I got pregnant again when he was 6 months old. One of my fears was a premature birth again. Doc said I had a 20-30 % chance. I carried my second boy full term to 8 1/2 months.

You will be fine, do not think about it and just focus on a normal healthy pregnancy. :)

Hi L.,

My son came early at 34 weeks 5 days due to PROM (premature rupture of membranes) I am assuming that is what you meant by abruption am I right? Anyway he is almost 23 months now and doing fabulous, I am also PG again. I found a great website with great women that have through all of this before also. It is http://www.kanalen.org/prom/community.php you can join the support list and read all about managin your PAP PG (pregnance after PROM) I have learned a ton! It sounds like you are lucky to have an OB who recognizes that you have a higher risk of it happening again. I requested P17 shots for myself and was denied by my OB and the Peri. that she discussed it with, I am taking it very easy with this PG and taking extra supplements to prevent infections and such.

If you would like to visit more please don't hesitiate to contact me personally at ____@____.com luck, I should warn you that there are many many success stories on the PROM site, but also many sad stories also.

Hello L.,

When I was pregnant with my daughter I had a lot of complications. When I was 30weeks I had ruptured membranes and my daughter came at 33weeks. 7weeks early and she is doing wonderful. She is 2 know and is healthy and if you looked at her you wouldn't even known that she was preterm. When we got pregnant with our son I was scared and worried but I did everything the doctor told me even go on bedrest which is realy hard to do when you have a toddler running around. But my son came 5weeks early and is doing healthy. Try not to stress yourself out. I believe that stress was a big part of my early pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a heathy pregnancy and baby. When are you due?

i had a placental abruption with my first baby when i was 3 months pregnant. I was put on bed rest and everything healed after about a month. I had no problems after that. I am now pregnant with my second and and 20 weeks. So far there has been no abruption, and I anticipate the rest of the pregnancy will be fine. I think it is more of a random occurance rather than something to expect each time. So think positively! I'm sure your baby will be just fine.

My son was born at 25 weeks 6 days due to ruptured membranes. Yes you read the correctly he was 14 weeks 1 day premature. You wouldn't be able to guess that now at almost 4 years old. I now have a baby girl who is 8 month old and was born on her due date. The doctors, at Mayo, could not determine why my membranes ruptured in my first pg, so in my second pg my Dr. suggested that I not workout and keep activity to a moderate level. At 16 weeks I started on P17, you can read more about P17 here. http://www.kanalen.org/prom/pap.php?p=4b
and was on it until 32 weeks. You can email me anytime with questions or just to chat. My hopes are in a nice long pg for you and a health little one to come when he/she should!

Every pregnancy is different, totally and completely. Don't worry it's not good for your health or the health of your baby inside you. I know it is easier said than done but try. I had major problems with my first and no problems with the next two.

I can tell you are afraid of your baby being preterm. Sometimes the fear of something is as bad as the actual thing. Vitamin E helps the placenta adhere to the uterine wall. Don't take more than 400mg at a time. Or, you can get it from foods like avacoado, green leafy veggies, eggs, nuts, wheat germ.

Hi L.. I had a placenta abruption my second pregnancy it was very significant and caused a lot of problems for my baby and me. My third pregnancy was completely uneventful despite the cautions from my doctor about the chances for recurrence. Your doctor will surely monitor you more closely this time (additional ultrasounds and stress tests). Be positive. As others have said, just because there were problems once does not mean there will be any again. Congratulations and good luck.

My first child was born 6 weeks premature so I can understand how you are feeling. I did not have an abruption however mine was for no apparent reason. I would feel confident in your doctors only a 20% chance it will happen again. They told me my chances were 50/50 so they monitored me closely and received the 17p shots once a week from 18 weeks til 36 weeks. I did have an episode of contractions but I was able to catch them early enough and they stopped them and put me on bed rest for two weeks until 36 weeks and then delivered a healthy baby girl ON my due date! So just trust your doctors and do as they say :) If you want go to sharyourstory.org a lot of mom's will support you there too!

PS my 6 week premature baby (Lucy) is now almost 2 years old you and you would NEVER guess she was 4lb 15oz when we brought her home!! :)
