9 Month Old Standing

My son just learned to stand and will do little else. I have lowered his mattress and have made a rail gaurd for the top of his crib. I am having a hard time walking away at naptime and night because I am afraid he will fall and hurt himself. He is like a drunken sailor in there and just goes flop when he falls down. HELP?????

What can I do next?

Falling is all apart of learning his balance and cordnation. He may cry and fuss a bit but it won't be from the actual fall it'll be from frustation that he hasn't mastered his skills yet.As much as we want to catch every fall we can't.Let him explore hold back your facial expressions smile and watch him blossom.

Welcome to the days of bumps and bruises. Yes, he will fall and he may fall pretty hard a couple times, but he will be fine. My son did the same thing at 9 months and was walking by 10 months. Every once in a while he still bangs his head pretty good on the crib - but he recovers. We hate to see our children get hurt, and of course, prevent it when we can, but falls, and bumps and bruises are just a natural part of growing up. Good luck.

You might look into getting a crib tent. My daughter climbed right out of her crib at about 11 months old. By the grace of God she was uninjured, but like you, I worried that she might not be so lucky next time. Crib tents are pricey and not all cribs and crib tents are compatable but most crib tents list which kinds of cribs they fit. I got mine off EBay for about half the cost of a new one. I do not regret the purchase. My daughter is now 26 months old and we still use it.

Good luck.

Let him practice standing in his crib a lot while he's awake and you are there to catch him. They learn fast, and even then he may take a fall or two, but you'll at least be there.

Congratulations on one of your first milestones! He's a drunken sailor because he hasn't developed his leg muscles yet. He'll be fine falling in the crib...I would suggest that you get some kind of toy though that can be used as a table & stroller so that when he does get his legs under him he will be able to start moving them. I know LTD Commodities made one several years ago that I loved it was triangular shaped and on end would be a ball game the kids could play and when you flipped it it was a walker. Awesome stability too!

he will be just fine! My daughter took her first steps at 10 months old. Here is a hint if you want him to learn to walk keep the shoes off of him. putting shoes on can actually slow them down because their feet muscles can not learn how to grip and tighten properly.

Otherwise find a good push toy for walkers. my daughter loved a green scooter toy that converted from being ridable to pushable. Just wait till he hits 18 months and no longer walks but runs everywhere thats when they get hurt more. so long as you keep the floor relatively clear of anything that could hurt him when he falls he will learn to walk soon. as for being in the crib most likely it won't even phase him when he falls.
