6 Month Old Standing Not Crawling?

Hi I'm a first time mom to a wonderful baby boy. He is extremely curious(nosey!) of everyting. In the last few weeks he started getting on his hands and knee and rocking back and forth. So I've prepared myself for him to crawl any day now. However, in the last week or so he started standing/pulling himself up. We'll find him holding himself up in the crib or using my husband or myself and pulling himself up. I'm just curious if this is a natural/normal way for him to develope? I try to encourage the crawl and he'll bounce here and there. I'd appreciate any feed back:-) Since he's my first I have nothing to compare his developing too. Thanks

What can I do next?

Thanks to everyonoe who responded. Your comments were very encouraging and scary-haha! Now my husband and I will have to make a run to the store for baby gates, baby locks, etc! The family is now taking bets on how soon he'll walk!

Hi, I have a 2 yr 7 month old boy and I can say he has done everything his own way on his own time. I think that he is standing is amazing! At six months. Just be happy he is still staying in one spot, once they start moving it is ALL downhill from there, HA!! My son was standing long before he started crawling. He is a very active guy, I think he was just ready to go go go and his legs weren't ready yet. Anyway, just remember that every child does things his own way at his own speed. I know a little guy that can crawl buy prefers to scoot on his butt!! It is the funniest thing to see. Take care and good luck

so normal, lots of children do this and some even skip crawling all together. brace yourself, it sounds like it may not be long before you have a mobile baby and everything goes into overdrive. good luck

My aunt told me that my cousin (now an adult) never crawled. She never even rocked back and forth. Never got on her hands and knees. My youngest is 9 months old and he does this wounded soldier scoot thing. Your son will get around any way he can and trust me (I have 3 with another on the way) once he starts going you're going to wish you had those days when he just layed down and stayed where you put him back.

Hi, I've heard that this is normal. Some babies never crawl, and others go straight to standing and then walking. My baby boy who is now 8 months only crawled for about a month and now everything, everywhere, every minute is about standing up! In the playpen, in the crib, on the furniture... its crazy! lol. It is def going to take a bit to get used to it, because obviously he can fall down and hurt himself but just let him explore, let him be. I let my son, fall a bit, but im still there to catch him and tell him "boo boo" so he can learn that if he let's go, he'll get hurt. I think standing helps him get strength in his legs as well and before we know it, maybe they'll be walking! Do you have a walker for him? My son, is all over the place in the walker.

Every child is different and can develop differently as well. I wouldn't be concerned about it. My son is 23 months, and he was walking at a little over 11 months. But he was able to pull himself up with things, go around a table holding on, etc. way before then. So I wouldn't worry about it. He did do his share of crawling though. My guess is he will be an early walker.

Don't worry, me and my boyfriend had the same situation with our daughter (who is 13 mths old now, at 6 mths old she was sitting up, then all of a sudden at 7-8 mths she started pulling herself up in the crib and on her toys. She didn't start to crawl till 10 mths old and is now cruising around taking only a couple of steps by herself. So don't worry all kids develop at a different speed. As long as your child is developing at a good speed (6mth sitting, 9mth-12mths crawling, pulling up or walking) your okay. If you have any concerns I would ask your child's doctor.

My first son was pulling himself up and walking round his crib, the sofa and anything else he could by 6/7 months and was never much of a crawler. He was walking round with one of those pushing toys around 10 months and was walking quickly after. It's certainly nothing to concern yourself with, your son probably won't crawl much and may be up and walking early too! The only problem then is trying to keep him still!! My other son didn't walk till he was 13 months and was a crawler. All kids are different and develop at different rates, which is normal. Enjoy these days of growth and curiosity, it's amazing how fast they grow up!

First of all, crawling is actually not considered a milestone since there are so many babies that actually don't--many will scoot or roll instead and then go right to walking. But the fact that your son is on all fours and rocking does mean in my experience that he will crawl soon--I think my son did that for about a month before he took off. As far as pulling up--that also came around the same time as crawling for my son. I think that their legs and arms are getting stronger so they can do both. And at 6 months of age--Ibet you'll have a walker before he's one...
So it sounds like your son is doing great!

Hi N..

I can only say that every child develops differently. But, my son did the same thing. He skipped the whole crawling thing and went straight to walking. He started about the same time as yours with the pulling up, so I "helped" him along with steps. He took his first at 7 months on his own and began walking really well by 9 months. Nothing to be concerned about! This probably means he'll be a self-starter on other things, too. Maybe a leader in his classes, maybe the president one day. :-)

Hi! My son started crawling and pulling up around the same time. My pediatrician said that once he started rocking like that, he would most likely start crawling in 1-3 weeks. So, you shouldn't have to wait too long! Also, I've heard that some babies skip right over crawling and just start walking. That could be the case with your little one!

Good luck!

Hi

I'm no expert, but have talked with a lot of moms about this and some experts. What I have found out is that most experts feel that it is vital that babies crawl first. Seems to be important for their development and learning later on in life.

They have seemed to link some learning disabilities with not crawling. I'm not sure, but you probably could talk with people that assist families with slow developmental learning babies. Not that your baby is slow at all, but, they would know more about the subject. Have a blessed day!
