6-Yo Still Wets His Bed and Sometimes Has Accidents During the Day

Not sure what to do. he uses the good-nites pull-ups at night, but during the day, if he's engrossed in a movie, video-game or just outside playing, he still has accidents. I make him go to the bathroom at least ever 1.5 - 2 hours. He'll be starting 1st grade in a week and we have bathroom rules for him at school. He had a few accidents in kindergarten that's why his teacher and I came up with rules. Bathroom right before school, after snack and right after lunch/before recess. But he still has the occassional accident at home. Sometimes he says he didn't know he had to go and other times he does the "potty dance". Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My step-daughter is going on nine and she still wets the bed. I think we are hoping she just grows out of it. There are different things we have tried that helped, but we haven't been consistent in these things. One being "no more fluids after seven" and the other is waking up and or before going to bed getting her up again... I remember I must have been 10 the last time I wet my bed; don't think I did it often at that time, still that's pretty old. It seems to me kids range differently in this, as far as some have a problem with it for a long time and others it just doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Our daughter still goes back to her mom's on the weekend, so it can be hard to be consistent, not to mention we haven't made it priority here. I guess we are just letting it go for now. We have a four month old as well and so sleep is precious these days.
It is part of our daughters chore every day though to bring her bed sheets to the laundry area and wipe down her plastic sheet. I also have her load the washer and change the loads and fold her stuff sometimes, all supervised... My hope is that she will grow tired of changing her bedding every day and having to take a shower every morning because she has to for the pee on her.

As for the day... I just tell her to go. I don't ask her anymore whether she has to go to the bathroom... she'll say no or that she can old it, so I just tell her she needs to go right then and that has helped I think with the daytime accidents.

I have a kindergarden son that has a some what simular problem. He wets the bed at night sometimes so I have him wear the goodnights as well. He had maybe three accident in school last year. None so far. I also Have a friend that her son was doing that and when she had him looked at by a dr. they put him on some meds and that stopped the problem. Have you seen if it is a medical problem that is causing his accidents

Dear A.,

The bathroom rules sound great, and save a lot of 'face' at school, and, at home, you could make home rules - I don't know what. But you and he would be able to come up with good ones.

Also, remember boys and men are different from girls and women. My son wet the bed for a long time too, he slept very deeply. Also, he was a very intense person, and enjoyed life so much that he forgot the bathroom even existed sometimes.

Also, maybe his muscles that control our bathroom habits haven't finished maturing - he is only 6 years old.

Hi, I am Dr. Demaray and I am a chiropractor. Chiropractic care has helpe many children get over bed wetting. Bedwetting can come from a nerve that is pinched, a nerve that goes from the spinal cord to the bladder and sphincter muscle. If the nerve is pinched the message of bladder fullness is not getting sent and then accidents can occur. Have your sons spined checked to see if possibly this could be the problem. If this is the cause, a chiropractor can adjust the area and get the pressure off the nerve and the problem is solved.
Sincerely,
Dr. C. Demaray

Bedwetting is hereditary. My hubby was one. My oldest grew out of it around the age of 10. My middle kid never wet at night but at around the age or 8 he did get start to forget going to the bathroom and had some accidents during the day. I disciplined him for it and he never has had any since. My daughter is 6 and she wets at night. We use pull ups. All kids grow out of it by the time they hit puberty, unless there is a medical reason for it. I do think potty rules are a great idea.
Good Luck

My suggestion is to take him to the doctor. I have a daughter that has had "accidents" and wet the bed well into her teens. It's sometimes a medical thing. If he truly can't feel it, then something is wrong! God Bless you and yours.

My son started with accidents during the day that turned into potty accidents. It turned out he had encopresis and because he was avoiding the bathroom for potty reasons he would pee. We went to see Dr. Baron a Pediatric GI and got him on a mild laxative, after xrays of his GI to determined he was no longer constipated he is now on a mild laxative. He stills has pee accidents and it's usually when he has had a potty accident. The issue for us was that at the beginning we couldn't tell it was constipation, we thought he was wiping or he had diarrhea. Now he is being retrained to develop the habit of going potty because he has minimal sensation and eventhought he feels the pee he doesn't go because of fear of the potty accident. It may not be associated but it's just something else to keep in mind because it's their fault when the accidents happen.
