Hi moms,

I am at a loss right now and am looking for some suggestions. My daughter is 5 months old and has recently started waking back up at night. She started sleeping 8:30-6 when she was close to 3.5 months so I was excited. We have started solids, she even gets them twice a day. Many times she doesn't get up to eat she just gets her diaper changed and then can go back in the crib with a little back rub or pat on the bum. I can't imagine she is wake because she is hungry, she drinks 3-4 7-8oz bottles and has fruit and veggies with some cereal too. Any suggestions on what to do? .

Don't change her diaper unless it is a stinker. Put her in a size up. Changing the diaper justs lets her wake up more fully. Try letting her settle herself by giving her 5-10 minutes. She may do it herself.

M.,

Babies sleep changes all the time. She might be hungry, especially if she is in a growth spurt. Any changes in her daily routine, new people in her life or changes in new foods even change make babies wake at night. She will eventually sleep thru the night again but if she needs something from you now you should just give it to her.

Good luck and try to sleep when she sleeps,
L.

She could be teething. Try giving her some tylenol or motrin before she goes to sleep. many kids start teething at 4 months of age. you won't see the teeth until it is too late to do anything for the pain.

Hi M.! Actually I think you & she are doing great if she was sleeping through the night and only now getting up once where she is easily soothed. If you can get her back to sleep by changing her & rubbing her back I think that's great, and to me suggests she's not hungry. I suspect she'll pass through this phase. As another post said, I think it's normal for them to go through phases of waking and I wouldn't resort to crying it out or anything - she's still so young and is doing so great sleeping so much. My little one goes through lots of phases - have you recently gone back to work? I went back to work at 3 months and she started waking more during the night for a bit. It definitely also could be teeth - give her some infant tylenol and she if she sleeps through.

Good luck and happy thanksgiving

Everything in its own time. My 11 month old still wakes from time to time. Maybe your little one is teething?

I would not start feeding her again at night since an active tummy will keep her up, assuming she has sufficient weight to make it through the night. I swear by Dr. Ferber's book, which lists many different sleep issues and I have used it for the ones my kids had. http://www.amazon.com/Solve-Your-Childs-Sleep-Problems/dp...
His method to help kids sleep through the night worked for my kids who were both still feeding every 2 hours at 6 months! Good luck.

She's hungry - feed her more at the last nighttime feeding, cereal mixed with apple juice, or fruit, and as much milk as she wants. Growth spurt probably. Good luck!

It's very normal for a five month old to not sleep through the night and to still need night feedings. Try giving her a bottle. If that solves the problem, you know she's still hungry at night.

Five months is really young for ANY solids, let alone that volume. It's more than likely irritating her gut. I'd cut back and see if it helps.

Hi M.,

I wouldn't worry at all. You're both doing great, especially as others have said that you can soothe her easily. As far as I understand, it's very common for babies to sleep well the first 3 months and then start to wake. This happens for many reasons some of which may be teething, a developmental milestone, or separation anxiety. I think sometimes as they get older, they also become more aware of your not being there when they wake up, and just seeing you is enough to calm them.

Don't worry, this, too, shall pass. It was similar with my daughter in that we were spoiled by her good sleep early on so when she started to wake, it seemed so hard, but we're actually very lucky. Babies sleep patterns are changing constantly, I think, especially when they're so young. Once we get used to something, a tooth starts coming in and everything changes again! Just keep things the same as much as possible and as long as you can rule out medical causes for her waking, she'll eventually go back to not waking again.

Good luck!

it might be teeth already.... both my kids started cracking teeth at 5 mos. my daughter was a great teether, a little orajel and tylenol and she was fine. my son, woke up all night long and when his molars came in he got a severe diaper rash (cracked skin, sores etc) he'd be fine one diaper change, then next would be red so i'd put some creme on it, and the third was painful...
