4 1/2 Year Old with Stomach Cramps for 8 Days Dr Won't Help!

Our daughter last Sunday night started with stomach cramps, diarhea and a low fever. The stomach cramping has now continued all week. She is on the toilet 8-12 times a day crying and screaming that she is in pain while trying to have a BM. She only usually will have 1-3 BMs a day but tries 8-122 times. The doctors are testing her stool and urine and we are waiting for results. They have not been very helpful in finding out what is going on. I insisted on the stool and urine test and they finally agreed. Tomorrow morning if she is no better I am going to ask for an x-ray and flu testing? What else can we do? Has anyone ever experienced this with their child? We would like any advice you may have. We are desperately looking for answers for our little girl.

What can I do next?

I would also have them test for Celiac. It's an allergy to Gluten, I know of several young ladies that have this and it a diet change to correct. Hope this helps.

Oh, dear- you must be so worried about your little girl. I hope that they do take an X-ray- she may be impacted and just passing a little loose stool around the impacted fecal matter, this is called encopresis(?). I hope they can find the cause. If she usually has trouble with bowel movements, please consider getting her on a probiotic, to get some good bacteria in her bowel. Shaklee makes a couple of great products that really help. Their Citriboost contains bacteria and can be mixed with fruit juice- this is great for young children, or if they can swallow a tiny round pearl, this contains millions of bacteria. Let me know if I can help.
Best Wishes,
M.

Hello Emily, When my daughter was that age, she had an impacted bowel. Very serious, had to take her to the ER. Something sounds wrong here! It could be with the bowel itself. Has she been able to pass stool? And if so how much. What did the doctor say about an enema? Flu is not going to effect the bowels or the digestive system. That hits the lungs, sinuses, etc. Insist on the doctor taking this more serious. Remember, that you pay the doctor, so he works for you, not the other way around. When my son was 10 months old, he fell over inside a shopping cart and slammed his head on the floor very hard. I took him into the ER and was berated by the doctor for bringing him in for no good reason. I refused to leave. Told them that they would have to call the police to escort me out unless they did a skull ex-ray. It just seemed to me that something was very wrong! He wasn't acting right, and I knew my baby. Well, as it turned out, he had a 7 inch skull fracture!! Listen to your mommy insticts, they are usually right on. Good luck.

Go to a new dr.!! And keep going until they tell you something your satisfied with. Never trust a dr. 100%, trust your gut! Your the parent and are there to see what she is going through. Dr.'s forget they work for us and there are plenty around.

Hi K. -

It might very well be a food allergy but it could also be a parasite in the intestines. I had something similar happen during my first trimester with my second child when we were in a house with well water. It was the worst. Instead of gaining weight I lost 20 lbs. and quick. Even if the doctor has tested her stool he may not have tested for parasites. I would be sure to ask. If you don't like what you hear go to another doctor until you find one that will listen to you and act accordingly. In the meantime, if she holds a pillow to her abdomen it may help ease some of the cramping and pain.

Good luck - S.

Hello Emily,

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter being sick and the doctors not being more helpful. it could be a food allergy as well as gluten intolerance/ celiac sprue. perhaps is time for new doctors. How long will it take for the results to comeback? I hope it's not ulcerative colitis nor chron's disease.

for starters,
~~ get her a new toothbrush and toothpaste (in case she's re-infecting herself)

~~I'd eliminate the following from her diet:
- all milk/dairy products a
- all wheat/rye/barley (gluten)
(watch out the add gluten to other packaged foods)
- all breaded foods...
- high fructose corn syrup
- monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- processed meats
- caffeine

so a bland diet (no toast unless is a gluten free bread)
read every label....

now you're probably thinking what can she eat?
-rice
-corn
-potatoes
-chicken
-quinoa
-amaranth
-buckwheat
-fruits
-vegetables
-yams

also get her some probiotics and maybe even some chewable papaya enzymes to help her body digest the food better. increase her magnesium intake.

keep a food diary. she might need allergy testing too.

See how she responds. Keep at it until you get the right answer for you and your daughter.

Good luck! ~Carmen~

K., ; awww it must be h*** o* you and her, lots of water, and she may have a food alergy, it can cause that, or food poisoning, if they dont find anything check these areas, hang in there, food alergies can do it , so can food poisoning, but food poisoning would make her vomit too and it will pass it would not last for a week, hang in there and continue to do what you are doing, but diareha nothing to mess with, lots of fluids, stay away from breads, wheat is a food alergy some get, give her water , water water, hope things work D. s

My friend's son also recently had something like this. It went on for quite some time and they went so far as to meet with specialists, have a scope done, etc. They didn't find anything and put him on a probiotic (you can get them at Whole Foods but I think they have a prescription strength one for him) and the problem has pretty much gone away. I'm not the best at explaining it but I think it basically is supposed to replace the healthy bacteria in the body. He was getting to the point he didn't want to eat anything any more. It could be worth a try!

I went thru this myself in my early 20s. Im now 37. I thought it was the stomack virus, so did the drs. back then. I then learned I had IBS and then Chrohns disease. Please go seek a Natural Pathic Dr. They should put her on fish oils, probiaotics and LGlutin powder. This saved my colon from being removed. There is DGL you can also buy these on Amazon. Use Potent and safe product, I use Pure, & Vital Nutrients. This disease does affect younger and much older people. Stay away from fruit juices, caffeine, dairy and gluten for at least 5 weeks, see how she does. She should be seen by a natural path, there is a lot to be learned. Good Luck. Oh and I have been in remision for 6 years!! I give my 1 & yr old boys, probiotics and fish oil and LGlutamin all the time as well as Vit D3 to keep them healthy. Lots of water and they drink almond milk.

When you have diarrhea for a week it is a good thing to test the stool with a stool culture. Likely they sent it to check also for parasites (be sure to ask about giardia also, esp. if she's been lake swimming or if you have questionable water supply). So I would wait to get those results back before jumping to anything else. In the meantime, ask if she is allowed to take some prescription anti-diarrhea medications. And I also like yogurt or probiotics for upset stomachs.
