3 Year Old Sleeping Arrangements in Hotels

Hello everybody~

My husband and I are taking our 3 year old daughter to Hawaii in July. We will have 2 queen size beds in our room. My daughter currenlty sleeps in a full size bed at home (with a safety rail). I would love for her to sleep in her own bed at the hotel. Does anyone have any recommendations of how to keep her from falling out other than using the hotel pillows. Moving the bed against one wall is usually not an option. Is there anything that I can take with me that will work as a temporary rail? Any suggestions or if you have done something that worked I would love to hear about it.
Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Put pillows on the floor so that if she falls out of bed she'll land on them and be safe. I can't imagine a 3 year old not being able to stay on the bed though.

When we travel we take sleeping bags and the kids camp out between the beds and have a lot of fun.

Ask for extra towels, then roll them and place them under the bottom sheet along the edge of the bed. The slighlty raised edge by doing this will alert her to not roll off the bed.

yes - queen beds are large enough that she probably won't fall out of bed. My son was a wild sleeper and in situations like this we would occasionally find him at the top or bottom of the bed, or with a limb hanging off the edge, etc. and once he did fall off - but at age 3 they don't get hurt - jsut startled. It's not as if she's a newborn.

You're going to Hawaii - don't use this as something to worry about - have a wonderful time!!!

We ask for extra pillows and put them on either side of the bed, but be sure to put them UNDER the sheet or they will just fall off. We travel a lot and this always works.

depending on how big she is you could ask for a room with a king size bed for you and hubby and put her in a crib which most hotels offer or bring the rails with you. i know that we had some for our kids there were really just 4 bars and a mesh side. that could easily fit in a suitcase.

We've requested a cot be brought up and put it in a corner of the room. We've always managed to find a spot and our daughter liked having her own little bed.

If after trying the already great advice given below and she still manages to fall out of bed.......then hubs and I have taken turns sleeping with the youngest child when we have 2 queens. We are one side of the barrier and we put pillows on the floor.

Whenever I read a question regarding bed rails, I cringe. I guess some children can have them without a problem, but my own children were such climbers that I always feared a rail would just be something that would cause their fall to be longer and harder. I did use pillows on their beds when they were small, but found that it was much better to have a soft cushion on the floor so that if they did fall they didn't have as much chance of actually being injured.

In my opinion, she is old enough to sleep without a bed rail. My youngest turned 3 last week and has never had a bed rail on her twin bed. Yes she fell out 2 or 3 times at the beginning (at age 2) but now sleeps like a champ. I'd be more worried about having intimate time with my husband then my daughter falling out of her bed.

Queen beds are pretty big - if she's not a roll-around like crazy sleeper, she may be fine in the middle of the bed. Otherwise, you could ask for extra pillows and put them under the sheet on the edges of the bed so they won't move as much and they'll be a buffer to keep her in the middle. Have fun!

My son started sleeping in a bed at the age of 15-17 months. He's almost 3. He's only fallen out once and he didn't get hurt. It was a long time ago so I never worry that he's going to do it again. Hopefully she can just sleep in the bed even though there aren't rails. Otherwise, maybe you can use rolled up towels. Also, maybe ask the hotel if they have anything to use.

Since she is used to sleeping in a full size bed then the queen would be perfect. I highly doubt she will fall out. We do that with our 3 year old. When we get a room we get the 2 beds and she sleeps by herself. She is fine with it and she really moves around alot. If you feel uncomfortable about not using rails then put the pillows on the floor. This way if she does fall out she will have a cusion to fall on. Enjoy!

Put pillows on the floor so if she does fall out it wont hurt. But if you keep using a rail or chairs or wall to keep her in, then she will never learn where the edge is. If she falls out a couple times I think she will learn to sense the feeling of the edge sooner and then stop falling out. I bet she doesnt fall out at all. Aloha!

I used to take blankets and bedspread, roll them up to create a U shaped barrier on top of the bed. You can use extra towels, too. With the pillows at her head, this makes a nice little "nest" that will keep her in the middle of the bed.

We have the same problem - what we do now is get a king size bed with a sleeper sofa. My 4 year old loves the sleeper sofa and they are lower to the ground. The arms from the sofa help keep him in and then we stand the sofa pillows up to create more railling. Plus you can move a sleeper sofa so that is next to the wall. And you guys get the king size bed. Problem solved.

My son (same age) sleeps in a full at home too with no rail. It is against the wall but he pretty much stays in the middle. Why not remove the rail at home and see what happens? Is she a really active sleeper?

You might try asking the hotel if they have rails for this purpose.
Or...ask for a king size fitted sheet that you can put extra pillows or blankets under to create a barrier.
If she'll have an even bigger bed than she's used to, I doubt she'll roll off.

If you're worried about it, you can always back chairs up to the side to act as temp rails. And as a couple of people have already suggested, OneStepAhead has a few travel options like cots, inflatable beds, rails, etc.
