My husband is in the military and well be making our way from San Diego to silverdale Washington. I'm driving with my parents and 1 year old son (and 5 animals!). This will be his first long trip since becoming mobile (we did San Diego to Phoenix when he was 5 weeks). I have a feeling he won't be happy camper and I have no idea what I can do to keep him occupied for that long! We have several stops planned along the way and he likes to sleep in the car but does anyone have any good toys or activities I can do with him while hes awake? I'll take any suggestions! Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

You can take along his favorite toys from home, and go to the store and help him pick out a few too. Also portable dvd players are life savers too with favorite disney movies or whatever he likes. They have many new interactive books too. Good luck and safe travels!

we always leave in the evening if at all possible, this just makes things easier when traveling with kids. also I always pack plenty of snacks, water bottles, juice boxes, bananas, apple slices (they sell them in a bag already sliced), crackers etc. also I always pack new toys, go to the dollar store, i spend like $10 in new toys, they wont last long because they are cheap but they will keep him occupied more because they are new, crayons & coloring books, a travel dvd player if you can. at one they are still in diapers so at least you don't have to stop for him to use the potty, i plan stops every 4 hours & we stop for 45min to an hour, & stop at a place where they can run & play, if they dont eat much its okay because they can eat in the car they cant run in the car : )

This is a really fun phone: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P... You can record messages to your son and he can play them back. If he's talking, or even babbling, he can record his own messages too.

This is another good one for the car if someone is sitting in the back seat with him: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P... You can play the CD and someone can use the hand puppet to act things out and tell different stories. If he's alone in the back, you can buy just the CD and that will keep him entertained for awhile too.

When I traveled with my son at that age, I also went to the 99 cent store and picked up a few random things. I got a calculator and he loved pushing the buttons. I got a couple of cheap matchbox cars that he had fun with too.

Good luck!

I suggest getting a DVD player that hooks on the seat. They're a lifesaver! OR--Do most of your traveling at night when he's normally sleeping. This is what we do with our 17 hr annual drives from PA to FL.
