2 Yr Old Sleep Habits

I have always gotten such great responses from all of you moms so I thought I would see if you have any ideas on how to get my son to sleep in a little bit. He just turned 2 and has always been a good sleeper until recently. He is so tired by about 7:30 to 8:00 that he will ask to go to bed but then he is up by about 5:30 or so. This is fine during the work week but on the weekends it is a killer. Any ideas on how to get him to sleep in? We have tried to keep him up later but that usually back fires because he is still up early and then he is cranky until nap time.

What can I do next?

hi A.,

I know how that is. My husband and I took turns getting up with our daughter on weekend mornings. At least one of us got to sleep in! (he would take Saturday mornings I would take Sunday mornings - and try to do quiet things so the other could sleep in).

:-)

If your son was sleeping longer before, he might be waking because it is lighter earlier in the morning now. If that is the case you can try black-out shades.
It might just be his internal clock telling him it's time to wake up. My first son woke up between 5:30am and 6am regardless of the number of hours of sleep he got. I decided that I wasn't willing to get him out of bed before 6am. Even though I was awake when he woke up at least I got to stay in bed until 6am.
I hope you get some sleep!

My 2.5 yr old is the same way. This was fine before when I was working FT but now am at home thanks to baby #2's arrival and am probably not going back for a while. I have tried shortening his nap (which is usually 2 hrs), earlier naps, later naps, later bedtimes, but I think I have an early riser on my hands and that's how it's going to be. Sometimes he gets up at 6 or so, gosh I feel like I have been able to sleep in forever on those mornings! When he is up at 5 we do bring him in our bed, sometimes he will fall back asleep, other times we'll turn on TV and he'll snuggle quietly for an hour or so. Sometimes he is just ready to rock and roll at 5am and I agree, it's killer! Look forward to any other advice that others have on this!

The sleep books say to not go to him until it is a reasonable time to wake up ,6:00 or so.He will get used to that time. When my twins wake up early I go to their room and cover them up and tell them to go back to sleep some more. Sometimes they do and sometimes they just lay there quietly. Every little bit of sleep helps though so keep trying:)Good luck!

I would try to shorten his nap. That should help. Also, you might want to try to have him come in bed with you at 5 and see if he goes back to sleep.

Good luck

Is he still taking naps?? If so ask the sitter to keep him up or give him a shorter nap. My son had stopped taking naps be 2 years of age and he would sleep about 10 hours each night. :)
