I am upset! I just returned from my baby's two month appt, and found out that her head is flat on her right side. The doc said not to worry, just give her more tummy time and make her sleep on her left...but I'm still worried!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. I feel much better knowing other people have gone through the same thing and their babies are now fine. I do need some more advice though...my daughter hates tummy time. She fusses the entire time! Do you recommend anything to help her with this?

My little girl went through the same thing. We just did what the dr said including neck exercises and putting her to sleep on the opposite side and everything is fine she actually just outgrew it around 6-9 mos. We never had to wear a helmet. Hope this helps!!

Your instincts are right in that you should be able to do more than wait for this change to happen. A really good D.O.,osteopathic physician, can help your child. Find one that uses cranial sacrial work. This kind of approach to healing uses the hands to readjust the body so that it can mend itself. This kind of physician also can help you recover from the rearranging of your body from labor. They are liscensed physicians and have the lowest rate of malpractice suits. Check it out and good luck!

Don't worry. Very few adults have flat heads on one side.

This is actually pretty common, my daughter had the same issue. Give your baby more tummy time and when you put her to bed alternate the side of her head she sleeps on. It will go away eventually, my daughter's head evened out around 5-6m.

I've read that this is rather common. My granddaughter had that and we did what the doctor advised and it reshaped itself. I don't remember how long it took but I'd guess at 6 months.

the doctor is telling you the truth. more tummy time. but also i would watch how you lay them down. with my child, we were so concerned about laying him the same way that our child started getting flat head too. so make sure you flop them - even on the changing table so that you alternate the side of the head. one way one day the opposite way the next day.....in the bed and on the changing table. it should go away.

As others have said, this is very common. Over the next few months, your daughter's head will grow a lot and, if you give her tummy time and other time to not be laying on her head, it will more than likely even out. Our daughter had the same issue and, at 13 months, she's fine. We just made sure she had tummy time and slept on the other side of her head.

The biggest thing you should ask yourself is, do you trust your pediatrician? If not, you need to find one you can trust. You should be questioning everything they tell you. After all, they have seen hundreds, if not thousands, of children and they do have a degree.

Your doctor is right, no need to worry. You can also gently rub her head also. Prop her on her left side.

The bones in babies heads are soft, so most likely this will not be a problem at all.

My first had a "stiff neck" right out of the womb. I was told the same thing at 2 months. Even looking back at pictures it is pretty noticable. However, I didn't really notice it at the time b/c I saw her everyday. Anyway we did the excerises and everything like you were told to do. Unfortunately for us, it continued to get worse. She would just turn her head to one side when she slept at night. We ended up getting a helmet for her to wear around 6 months - she wore it a little past her first birthday. Anyway, it is good that you pedi caught it so that you are aware and can try to work on it. I would just continue to stay on top of it like you are doing and ask about it at the 4th month well visit. Good luck!

I was told that also at my babies 4 month check-up - my pedi recommendeda helmet and said all kinds of things that totally freaked me out! I went the very next day for a second opinion and that pedi said she totally disagreed and that repositioning would work wonders over time. And to my relief it absolutely worked. My daughters head looks perfectly normal now(she is 7 months old). All I did was lay her on her left side all the time and make her do her tummy time even though she didn't like it at all. If you take your baby to the place that makes the helmets for their opinion I would be willing to bet they are going to tell you that your baby definately needs it (thats how they make their money) The helmet will stink over time just like a cast does and they do a x-ray for fitting - I was definately not willing to expose my baby to radiation unless it was absolutely necessary. I totally understand your worrying though - I did the same thing. Best of blessings to you and your baby

We were told the same thing on our son's two month appointment. Our doctor referred us to ECI (Early Child Intervention) for some at home physical therapy. They had some great ideas on how to make tummy time more enjoyable, and different "games" to do to challenge our son. They were also great with helping with other questions we had on his development. Being a first time mom it was great having somewhere else to go then to call a busy doctor's office.

We also just held him setting up on our lap all of the time to prevent him for laying on that spot. Since we did this he was sitting up on his own by five months. Once he was sitting up on his own his head improved greatly, and I got a lot of stuff done. Hope this helps.
