I am having a difficult switching from breatmilk to whole milk. It is not that he will not drink it, it is that he is spitting alot of it up after he eats (more along the line of throwing it up). He is not gagging on it either but it happens within about 5 minutes of drink an oucnce or two. He has not had a spitting up problem in the past so I am sure that it has to do with the whole milk. The nurse at my pediatrician's office said not to use anything less than whole milk... What is your thoughts on this? Can I use 2% to try and get him transitioned? I only have about 3 days left of frozen breastmilk.

What can I do next?

I would call the doc again and explain what's going on. Your son may have a lactose intolerance - maybe the lactose in the breastmilk was so low that he didn't get enough to bother him. They should be able to offer help. I'm not sure how old your son it (I'm assuming he's turning 1?), but an option to ask the doc about is the 2nd step formulas. They have formulas now that are made for 9 through (I think) 24 months.

Good luck - I hope you get some good advice!!

My feeling-?...- I think the 2%is fine- OR water down the 2% or whole milk- it just may be too "thick" for him-he'll adjust- just lessen the watering down gradually. Remember- you may needs to lower his vitamin supplement after coming off breastmilk- Ask her about SOY?

Go with you mom instinct.

You don't state the age of your baby.....If he's under 12 months of age I think it unwise to try and give cow's milk, it is very tough for babies to digest, hence the many formulas out there.....it sounds like he may be allergic to milk, many babies (and adults) are, we just call it "lactose intolerant" I'd try a lactose free formula.

I would ask your doc about the lactose intolerance thing, too.

If it's not that, whole milk is best for that 1st year on cow's milk. Try to mix breast milk with the whole milk first instead of just whole milk. At first, use more breast milk than whole milk. Week after week, slack of the breast milk until he's used to the whole milk. Good luck!

My son was allergic to cow's milk (it seemed). Now he's just lactose intolerant. At 11-mos. old I talked to my homeopath. She recommended enriched soy- or rice milk. He loves it, and is growing great. He's now 4. Best of luck!

Sounds like he is lactose intolerant. I am also and that is exactly what used to happen to me. I must have grown out of it because I can have limited amounts now without getting sick. If it were an allergy, he would have other symptoms so I would suggest rice or soy milk. Get him used to it before he knows the difference!

Try half formula and half whole milk for a bit and see how he does. If he is still throwing that up I would call your pedi back. He needs the fat content for brain development in the whole milk.
