My son will be 3 in September. Over the past week and a half or so, he has started grabbing himself. I kindly ask him to put his hands down and he does. Well, in the past 5 days or so he has started having accidents. It is only "tee tee" accidents, so that's a good thing. We went to the Dr yesterday because he woke up with a rash and they checked him for a UTI, but nothing showed up. Has anybody else gone through this? At church last night he couldn't make it in time and wet his pants then threw a fit for the ladies in the nursery because he did NOT want a pull up. I had to come in and explain that he was not in trouble and eventually got the pull up on him. He associates pull ups with babies and hates being in them. I made him stay in one last night, just in case, and I'm glad I did. Only he somehow wet so much that he still woke up with wet sheets. I am out of ideas. I guess we will have to go back to no drinks after a certain time at night to avoid night-accidents, but what can we do in the day time? Even at school when they don't drink much and potty often he has had accidents. Should I get a 2nd opinion from a dr or what?! Help please!!!

What can I do next?

First of all you have moved in with someone else, that is a change. Then you are PG and he does know there is change. Just try to let him know , he is still a big boy and needs to go in the potty. Also, it's summer and when boy play, they for get they need to until it's to late. My son is 3 and has been potty trained for 1 1/2 yrs. He has had two accidents this summer. Good Luck and it all will pass.

Hello E.,

In my opinion based on what i've read from you in the couple of requests you've sent in, Your baby boy is having anxiety problems not bladder problems. His entire life is upturned beginning with now living with friends of his parents. He is not in his own home, probably not sleeping in his own bed, having to follow somewhat different rules perhaps. Anyway, everything is changed including his mommy now having another baby. Although he doesn't want pull-ups because he associates those with babies, he still wants attention from anyone who will notice him. it's quite typical of a small child. I suggest no pullups, no diapers. perhaps use plastic sheets to cover the mattress under the bed sheet. let his daycare workers know his life is in a bit of a change right now so they will have more patience with him. And do the same for him. Be more patient, spend more time with him alone to chat, to listen, to watch his behaviors, and attempt to identify what it may be he is feeling even if he has no words to express himself.

Love him as much as possible, showing him as much as possible. All will return to normal as soon as his life returns to normal. And if you plan to be living with friends awhile longer, for whatever reason you may have for doing so, your baby will adjust in time. He also picks up on your anxiety and the feelings of all the other adults around him in this home. It's never easy to live with another fmly who has rules different from your own. But kids adjust as soon as you do!

take care and good luck. God Bless you all...

sincerely,
D.

My brother was about 6 when he started to have that problem. He may have a narrow uretha (not sure how to spell), It is the tube the pee come out of. He had to have surgery to enlarge it. It may be worth going to a urologist and have it checked.

Hi E.,
Did you move in with your friends about the same time he started having accidents? Plus with you being pregnant too,I'm just wondering if it could be too much stress from the change in too short a time?
My daughter gets a rash when she has pee on herself for a while (usually early am after she's worn a diaper all night). You are lucky, my sweetie is 28 months and every day asks to wear "die-purr"...I'm trying to ease her into potty training so she won't resist, but you are ahead of the game if he's regressing but is basically trained.
I don't think it's unrealistic at All to go back to his Dr. and ask for more tests/or questions either. I put more stock into Mother's Intuition than Medicine-we KNOW sometimes when Something is wrong even if we don't know What is wrong...
Hope this helps.
Good Luck,
C.

My 8 year old was having problem with sudden urges and urine leakage when he played. I had noticed him grabbing himself often and also having accidents at night. Turns out he was actually constipated and the blockage in his intestine was not allowing his bladder to drain completely and was putting extra pressure, similar to a woman's bladder during pregnancy. I was so worried about his urine issues that I hadn't noticed how infrequent his bowel movements had become. After a few days of miralax (prescription stool softener safe for kids) he was back on track and no more accidents. Something to think about.

My oldest boy started regressing when our 3rd baby was born-except his was w/ poop.We had to keep working w/ him and eventually it stopped(it lasted about 3-4wks).SInce he doesn't like the pullups u can use that to ur advantage. Our son didn't wanna have to go back to them or diapers,so, we told him he HAS to wear them because he's not pottying like a big boy...It only took a few times of him HAVING to wear them and then he stopped 'cause he HATED wearing diapers!

On a medical stand point: he might have a smaller bladder. My uncle had a small bladder for his age and at around 6-7 yrs old he started wetting the bed.My grandmother had to invest in plastic sheets and "train" his body/bladder.She had to wake him up in the middle of the night to take him to the bathroom-it lasted for about a mt and finally his body learned to tell him when it was time to go.....

hope this helps ;)

I would think it is a medical issue, not behavioral, since he has only recently started doing this (grabbing himself and having accidents) plus the rash. Since he's been cleared for a UTI, maybe it is something else. Perhaps a second opinion (or go back to his regular dr. and ask if there is anything else they can test for, etc.) or a visit to a urologist? And I would think it's natural for him to get upset about having the pullup on since he was probably very proud of himself for getting potty-trained and as you said, doesn't want to be like a baby. So I'd have him checked further medically. Lastly, I've always heard that boys especially tend to take a long time to potty-train, and most people I know with boys said it took til they were 3 or even 4 til they were potty-trained. But since it appears he was already successfully potty trained since you say the problems just started a week or two ago, I still think it might be a medical problem. I wonder what the rash could be - did the dr. not look further into that after concluding that he didn't have a UTI? Hopefully a doctor or urologist can figure it out. Good luck. Hi,

I am a Nana and have gone through this with my grandson. I was told that little boys bladders don't grow as fast as their bodies sometimes. My daughter and I would prompt my grandson to use the bathroom often. Before going to church, we would have him go and again once we arrived. She also limited drinks at dinner and nothing to drink after dinner and before bedtime. He now is very aware of what he must do and is doing fine. Do they now have a pull up product that looks like "big boy" pants? I think pampers puts them out. You might check thiese out. The add has a youg boy wearing a pair at a slumber party.

Are you using bubble bath? It sounds like he is burning,or irritated when he grabs himself. I had three boys and they all go through this. Don't make a big deal of it and keep trying to find an answer. Has he been circumsized? Make sure it has not grown back together with lint around the head. This would look read and irritated around the head. My nephew had this problem. It was so bad they had to re-circumsize him at 18 months.

If he hates pulls ups, there must me a reason. Always get a second opinion. You know in your gut when something is wrong.Good luck.

Please make sure his blood sugar has been checked. Sudden accidents is how my son was diagnosed with diabetes. I don't mean to scare you, but it is very serious, and a negative result will make you feel better about it. My sons are 14 months apart and some times were pretty trying, but the bottom line is that everything they go through is a phase. Also, every child is a blessing from God, so just keep that in mind, along with a sense of humor!

It could have alot to do with the new baby coming soon. Children can sense the changes and alot of time they will regress back to old behaviors, and that is one of them. I wouldn't discipline, but talk to him about the changes and assure him that you will still love him. Even though he is 2 1/2, he still knows what is going on. It sounds to me he feels some stress about it all. Even though you are tired and all, make sure you talk to him, spend time playing with him like you did before. When he has an accident, just reassure him that you love him and try to be positive. It will all go back to normal soon. It may just be an attention getter since you are probably getting alot of attention.

Have you thought, that although your son may not understand it -- there's some jealousy with second baby on the way?

I really don't know the answer to accidents -- I think children take a long time to train. He may just be so busy doing what children do he doesn't realize until too late he has to go to the bathroom.
