Here is a link to what the traditional gift for each anniversary is.

Year one is paper, think concert tickets, football or some other sporting event, I can't think of any other items besides some sort of collectible that is paper like a comic book that has some value.

Traditionally, the first anniversary is the "paper" anniversary. What can you do with paper? Write your husband a love letter? Make a scrapbook (there's a little paper in that) of your first year of marriage? Send out for dinner and dine on paper plates?

First Anniversary -

Traditional - Paper, plastic

Modern - Clock

So you could:

get a clock (I did this & had an engraver make a sm sign on those
plastic name badge-type material which I affixed to the
back of the clock w/adhesive velcro)
paper (frame your baby's sonogram from your ultrasound)

paper/plastic (have a picnic ready to go w/some fun foods from the deli.
The picnic can even be on your living room floor if you can't
get to a park, or backyard due to inclement weather.)

paper (take out a small, cheap ad in your local paper ((some are free))
giving your hubby a shout-out)

paper (write a poem)

clock (give him a running watch or a regular watch if he needs one)

paper (write him a poem or list the reasons you love him. Frame it.)

Happy anniversary & congratulations on the birth of your baby!

I downloaded a copy of the cover of the book..."The Giving Tree". I changed the apple into a sparkly heart 3-D sticker. Then drew a heart on the tree trunk and put my initials + his initials inside the heart...and framed it. It was like I was the tree and I was giving him my heart...and of course the little boy represented my husband. Framed it....and it was a huge hit with him.

In Hawaii, this is a gift that is cultural. It is called a "Maneki Neko Cat." Which is of the Japanese culture. And is given for special occasions.
Here you can read about it:

Also, the year 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. Thus, Dragon themed items are auspicious. Whether or not you are of the culture.

These are cultural gifts. Of which they are very unique.
In Hawaii, we have many of these types of gifts.

Yes to the paper! You can make it fun, just get creative. Ours was scrapbook stuff and my MIL got us a giant bag of Christmas, Easter, July 4th, etc. Paper plates, napkins, etc.
I made a scrapbook of our wedding. My husband got me a diamond necklace.

the first anniversary is traditionally paper, so for our first anniversary, way back in Sept 1995, I wrote different I Love You messages on as many types of paper as I could get my hands on. Each message was a different "I love you because..." message. Post it notes were on all sorts of things, like on the Coke in the fridge it said "I love you because you choose Coke over Pepsi". I wrote on toilet paper, paper towels, post its, fancy papers, plain ole paper...
I still have the box where I put all those paper love notes, I think I'll pull that out for our 20th anniversary. I'm sure that one is "recycle", right?

I haven't read the other replies so someone may have already mentioned that paper is the 1st anniversary gift. (You know, like 25th is silver and 50th is gold.) For our first anniversary, we bought plane tickets to Napa Valley where we got engaged. Now, I realize that with a baby on the way, you are probably not about to buy plane tickets! But just wanted to give you an idea of how paper could translate into a gift.

Is there a concert or event you'd really like to attend? Tickets to that would make a great gift (providing you have access to babysitting of course!) Movie tickets as well. Also, visit the store Papyrus. They have tons of cool things made from paper. You might find inspiration there.

If you like the whole paper theme, you could google "paper gifts" and probably find tons more ideas. Hope this helps! Happy Anniversary!
