19 Month Old Won't Keep Diaper On! Help!

My 19 month old is obsessed with taking off her clothes & diaper at home. I don't mind it, but it is a complete struggle trying to get her to put them back on, including diaper!! So, she walks around the house naked. She has been peeing on potty, but not yet #2. She even takes her clothes off when in her crib, at nap time, and sometimes during the night. The problem is that when she does this, she pees all over sheets. Which makes for a ton on laundry and clean up. Am I doing something wrong? I can't figure out why she wants to this constantly. I've tried putting diaper on backwards, it didn't work. The no clothes issue isn't as bad as the no diaper issue! I've tried diapers, pull-ups, and even toddler underwear. It's a complete battle to get her to keep it on!! Any advice?!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your response... but what do you do with the child who already knows how to unsnap her onesie and sometimes even finds a "houdinni-like" way to pull it over her head! I'm telling you, she is adamant on getting her clothes off. And usually they are tagless, comfortable clothes. As far as tape goes, I'm hesitant to try it, because I think she will simply pull the diaper down, like she does with pull-ups and underwear. I don't know... this is really frustrating me. But, I truly hope it's a phase that will pass. If you think of anything else, please feel free to let me know!!

OK. I don't have any advice for awake time, but had a houdini myself about 2 yrs ago. This will only work until she is potty trained at night and/or you don't need it because she loses interest. You need zip pjs. Get a baby safe safety pin and run it through the cloth on both sides of the zip and through the notch in the zip. This works on both winter and summer weight pjs...but it DOES mean no cute princess nightgowns. Mine never had the strength necessary to manipulate the safety pin and open it, so it was NEVER opened when we came back in the morning. It saved me a lot of laundry. And after an incident of painting with poop (she and her sister covered each other and their whole room with the poop from her diaper one evening), it saved me from selling her to gypsys. <g>

Good luck. Wish I had an idea for the day.

Do you use cloth diapers or sposies? I have a cloth diaper business and sell a cover that isn't real expensive and it has a buckle for just that reason : ) You might want to try that. It is called a Pro-rap
Good luck

I don't know if this will work, since she won't leave clothes on..but I was thinking maybe some cute undies, to put over the diaper. That way if she is excited about the underwear, maybe she will want to leave them on at least, and the diaper is under them! I don't know if this will work-being she didn't leave the pull ups on, but just a thought.
Also, I don't know if 19 months is too young to try and work on consequences, but maybe you can try the...if you leave your diaper on you can have a lollypop...? Good luck.

Put a "onsie" on her...this should keep her from getting to her diaper easily (unless she is really good at snaps).

Try dressing her in one piece jumpers and overalls with buttons or zippers on the back where she can't reach them. Then she can't reach the diaper to take it off.

If you can't find them, make your own by buying sleepers and cutting the feet out if needed.

Reading your post made me laugh! My oldest was the same way! I ended up having to use masking tape around her diaper after putting it on backwards, to keep it on. Masking tape is easier to break than duct tape, but can be harder for little hands. It was a pain, but it did work. I also used one piece outfits with the buttons in the back during the day, and sleepers at night (like the other mom said with the feet cut out and backwards).

When our son was in the taking-off-his-diaper phase, we would make sure he ALWAYS had a onesie on that snapped at the crotch(he couldn't get them off), and we taped his diaper closed (we used masking tape, but if your kiddo can get that off, try duct tape). Our boy only messed with his diaper at nap and bedtime--alone and in his crib--so we didn't have to worry about trying to keep him dressed when he was playing, just at sleeping times. I have heard that for kids who want to play in the buff, setting aside some amount of time to be naked where they can run around like that makes it easier to stay dressed the rest of the time. Although I don't know how you'd get that message across to a 19-month-old. Good luck!

Miss a few scheduled meals and I can assure you there will be no complaints when a meal is served. You have obviously let a bad situation get worse and so you must now use what is called "tough love" to get back on track. Try it. it may be rough for a day or so, but you will soon see that this advice works just fine!

K.,
I had a similar problem with one of my boys. He had to hold the goods as he fell asleep causing the front of the diaper to sag and leak. I never tried the duct tape so I don't know if that would work. However, I put his onesies on him backwards. He couldn't reach the snaps. Eventually he got over it and went back to wearing onesies the right way.
Good luck.

K.,

I agree with the other posts that you could use masking tape or duct tape with the diaper, but something else I saw in your post made me think that there is something about the clothes that may be bothering her. Are there any tags in the clothes? If so, try cutting them out. Maybe the clothes just feel wrong to her so she takes them off. My daughter doesn't like the feel of certain textures and even with clothes I have to make sure they are comfortable to her.
As far as her wetting the bed at night, do you have a mattress pad under the sheets? If not, it would save on a lot of clean up. Have your daughter help with laundry and other activities that involve her messes.
Keep trying different ideas, you'll find a way to help her learn to keep her clothes on. God Bless

A friend of mine had the same problem with her daughter. She used duct tape to keep it on during nap/bed time and explained to her that she has to keep her diaper on. She also tried putting the onesie on but it wasn't long before she figured out how to unsnap it. It took some time and a lot of laundry but with persistance and consistency she eventually learned to keep her diaper on. Good Luck!

Welcome to the "terrible two's"! She is exercising new found abilities, she will grow out of it. Try to get her some larger sized clothes to play dress up in, this may help with some of your issues. As far as the laundry is concerned, sorry, no cure. You just need to take some blackmnail pix for when she's dating-nothing too embarrassing. Now that the weather is warmer, if you have a fenced yard, let her "be free". My sister ran around the neighborhood naked around this age, fun memories!

One idea for nap and bedtime is to put the diaper on and a onesie over it. Sometimes getting the crotch snaps undone is more challenging and a deterrent to getting the diaper off. That may reduce the amount of laundry you have. Good luck!

Your child is old enough to know what she is doing and what you want her to do. Tell her firmly that she is not allowed to take her diaper off. Reward her for keeping it on and punish her for taking it off. Pain is a good teacher. Some rules must be set and obeyed. If your daughter does not learn this now, she will struggle all her life. AF

The best solution I could offer as a stay-at-home mom with three little ones is to put on a onesie and make sure it is fastened or a pair of pants/shorts. My 17 month old daughter tries to take off her diaper anytime she can, but only leaves it on if she has one of the above.

Sorry to say, or good for you, that we have been there. With the pjs, get the footy pjs and put them on backwards with the zipper in the back. This will ride up on the neck/throat, but it isn't too bad. Just DO NOT cut a v for it because then the child will pull at it and you will be back in the same situation with the clothes off. As for the diaper, sad sad sad to say, but duck tape the tabs. This will make it harder for you to get the diaper off too but well worth the effort when you consider the decrease in wash time. It is good to hear that your child is potty trained for #1 and I don't know how you can reinforce that while taping the diaper...but I'd say tape the diaper 1day and if your child goes dry & tells you that it is potty time, then take the tape off. Good luck!! (and just know it is a phase)
