18 Month Old Sleep - Too Much?

Hi everyone. I have a 3 year old who has never been much of a sleeper. He stopped napping completely at 2 and sleeps about 11 to 12 hours at night.

Now, by contrast, I have an 18 month old who also sleeps about 12 hours at night, but he also takes a 3-4 hour midday nap. So he's averaging 15-16 hours of sleep a day. He's super active when he's awake, and rarely sits still, but I feel like this is so much sleep (not that I'm complaining about the down-time I get!), and it makes me worried for his health! Is it normal to sleep this much? I know there is a large range of "normal" sleep behavior at this age. What does your toddler do?

Thanks,
K

This is normal I have a home day care and my younger children usually want to nap around the mid morning for about 1hr. Then after lunch will nap again 2-3 hrs. They also sleep a good sleep at night. Very normal. G. W

My daughter was like this...she would sleep 12 hours a night and take two 2.5 hour naps during the day.....she did that until she was FOUR! I asked her doc, and he looked at me and said, quietly, "Be thankful." I never asked another question about it. At 8, she's perfectly healthy now and still a wonderful sleeper.

Yup... totally within the normal range.

"Kids" (aka somewhere in toddlerdom until puberty) need about 11/12 hours a night... although because of work and school schedules most kids don't get enough sleep.

Most infants and toddlers need 12 hours + apx 2 2hour naps (although naps can come in any which way 3 1.5hour naps, 1 3hour nap, 2 2hour naps, etc ). AKA 16 hours. Then they drop a nap, and a lot of parents make the mistake of thinking their nighttime is going to be longer... but for most kids... it isn't. It's just a sign that their rapid growth cycle is slowing down, so they need less sleep. Then they drop their 2nd nap.

Your oldest is on the outside edge of "normal" (11/12 hours is pretty much the bare minimum), but your youngest is dead in the black for "normal" with apx 16 hours.

My two-and-half year old sleeps 12-13 hours at night and 2-3 hours during the day for his one afternoon nap. So that means that he gets 14-16 hours a day. That is right on track with your second child. My son functions well during the day and I have never worried about him sleeping too much.

Parents oftentimes have issues with their children not sleeping enough (skipping naps, delaying bedtime, waking frequently, etc.) but I have never heard of a parent worried about their child sleeping "too much." Especially because you have no other concerns I think you should just consider yourself blessed.

Babies ages 12-18 months are recommended to have 13 1/2 hours of sleep daily. All babies are different, though , some require more...some less. I wouldn't think it was exremely abnormal, but if you're worried this much, call your pediatrician for peace of mind.

Well I have a 20 month old son and he also sleeps alot. He goes to bed at like 1030pm and wakes up between 8 and 9 am. He also naps for 2.5 hours a day usually. He is very active when he is awake also. I think its normal toddler behavior. I enjoy his naps because Im pregnant and nap with him.

When my girls were young they would sleep about 12-13 hrs. a night and still take two 2-3 hr. naps every day. I've talked to other moms who said that thier kids did that same thing. Talk to your doctor to make sure everything is okay then enjoy because it doesn't last forever. lol My kids are older now and hardly ever sleep! I miss the break! :)

As long as he is happy, healthy and going to bed on time, I wouldn't worry.

Totally normal imo. Both my boys have been good sleepers. My almost 18 month old is sleeping from 6:30/7 until 7/7:30 and then takes a 2-3 (sometimes 4 but those are pretty rare) hour nap so he sleeps quite a bit too. Just enjoy it because it won't last long, my first was the same way but once he hit two it all changed and then became harder...now at age 4 it's near impossible to get him to nap but he still does 12 hours at night for the most part. I say congrats on a great sleeper - they are much easier :)

My son is 19 months old, and he sleeps 12 hours uninterrupted at night, and takes 1 nap daily totaling 2-3 hours. I think some children are just "sleepers" - I wouldn't worry.

My 14 month old, at 12months, was sleeping, I kid you not, 20 hours per day. She would go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 1pm the next day, and then stay up 2 hours maybe, then sleep again for maybe 4 hours and then was up for only 2ish hours again. She was like this for several months, I thought it was normal but then after telling people about it, I'd get comments that led me to take her to the doc about it. He was SHOCKED, said that's not normal, but we're talking 18-20 hours of her being asleep each day!! We were referred to a sleep specialist, but just as soon as they reviewed our file and we planned the appointment, she started waking up and being awake 8-10 hours per day!! And since then, she's been on a good awake/asleep schedule... So in my opinion, your kiddo is probably fine. When they start sleeping like mine did, that's when you should be worried. And as long as they are learning things and progressing as they should at their age, then it's probably just fine! You're blessed :)

Its fine.
Every child is different.

My son, at that age, was taking 2 naps a day... for about 2 hours each.
And he slept fine at night too.
My son is now 4 years old... STILL naps everyday.... for 2-3 hours. He naps once a day, now, at his age. And needs it. It is never a battle for naps or sleep time.

My daughter on the other hand, was the opposite.

That was definitely my son at that age! I sometimes felt like all he ever did was sleep! Eventually he will "outgrow" it, and like me, you will be wishing for the days when he would nap for 3-4 hours in the afternoon!

Sounds similar to my daughter...she's 2 years and she sleeps 14-15 hours daily. It's part of what makes her the sweetest girl!
