15 Mos Olds 1 Nap or 2? - Sunnyside,NY

Hi I have 15 month old twins. They seem to always take 2 naps but seem to take much longer to fall asleep. Sometime they seem like they don't want to take their nap but fall asleep eventually anyways. It usually takes them about 20-45 min to fall asleep. they take 1 -2 hours per nap (approx 3hrs total a day). I'm just wondering if they need to transition to 1 nap a day?

What can I do next?

I'm going to repost some info, hope it helps.

According to a great book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weissbluth, here are the stats: Mos. 13 to 15 - 1% have 3 naps, 43% have 2 naps, 56% have one nap. Mos. 16 to 21 - 23% have 2 naps, 77% have 1 nap at 18 mos.; 12% have 2 naps, 88% have 1 nap at 21 months. Mos. 21 to 36 - 5% have 2 naps and 95% have 1 nap at 24 mos.; 0% have 2 naps, 91% have one nap and 9% have no naps at 36 mos. On their third birthday, most children (91%) are still napping every day. At age 4, about 50% nap 5 days each week, and by age 5, about 25% are napping about 4 days each week. Naps are usually gone by age 6.
Hope this helps.

Most kids transition to 1 nap by this time, but if they are still able to fall asleep at night, and are still napping for at least an hour each nap, I would stick with two. Once the naps start interfering with night time sleeping though, I'd cut them down to one nap.

My daughter is just shy of 16 mos and just transitioned to one nap. I had asked our pediatrician about napping at our last visit about a month ago and she said, if she wants to sleep, let her. She'll let you know when she's ready. And so she did! She did not seem at all tired at her usual first nap time and fussed terribly when I tried to put her down and if she did eventually sleep it was only for 20 minutes or so. When we delayed it (till about 12p or 1p) she slept for 2-3 ours and did not need another sleep till bedtime. So don't try to force them, I'd say, but just follow their signs and your instincts.

They are getting old enough to be at one nap per day, it might be along nap at this time and eventually go down to an hour or so as they get closer to school age.

I would tend to think at that age, 2 naps would still be good. If the miss the am nap, are they tired, cranky and irritable? I'm sure it's tougher for twins to fall asleep esp. of they are napping in the same room. At least it's some down time & rest for them, even if they are awake most of the nap time.

Every child is different. When my two transitioned to one nap, it happened naturally. The stopped falling asleep for that first nap, but they were also able to stay awake and not be cranky and acting like they really needed a nap. One thing to consider is taking 2 naps during the day affecting what time they go to bed at night? If not I would keep them on 2 naps as long as they will go to sleep. I have a 4 year that still naps some days and I wish he didn't have to because then he can't fall asleep at a decent hour at bedtime.

Literally just went through this 2 weeks ago. If you're getting 3 hrs/day still then hey, stick with that as long as you can! But when my daughter (who turned 17 months the other day) was outright blowing off half of her morning naps, I just moved to one nap at around 1 or 130pm and she's finally clocking in a good 2 hrs again. Good luck!

hmm, three hours total. do they sleep good at night? are they fighting you to not take a nap most of the time or just once in awhile? i might try to delay nap number one, then give nap in between the 2 normal nap times, but move up bedtime if needed. if they fight you, just try it for a few days and see how it goes. for my kids, it would be that they would take nap 1, then not really want to take nap 2, but then would be sleepy at like 6. so i had to adjust all the times to get the one nap but make sure they werent cranky too early at night.

every child is so different, and im speaking as a mother whose first child usually only napped for 20-40 min at a time, and whose second wasnt taking ANY naps at 15 months(unless in the car, or an active day).

It all depends on your kids and their sleep needs. My oldest dropped to one nap around his first birthday. I knew he was ready to drop it because he was only sleeping for about 20 minutes or so for his first nap, then was ready to be awake. I had to move the one nap he was taking up earlier in the day, and he slept for about 2-3 hours during that one nap. During the transition, there were days he did need the two naps, but over the course of a couple weeks we went down to one. We didn't change his bedtime. You can always try keeping them up for one nap and see what happens. It won't take long to figure out if it's the right move!

Mine have all dropped the 2nd nap by 12 months (the youngest dropped the 2nd nap at 6 months). After they drop the morning nap, they would take a 3 hour nap starting around 12:30.
