14 Month Old Will Drink Anything from SIPPY Cup EXCEPT His Milk....

Hi ladies! I am having a tough time getting my son to drink his milk from a sippy cup. I started out giving him water or juice just to get him used to the cup. He loves water and will tolerate juice from the cup, but the second one drop of milk hits his tongue, he either spits it out or makes a terrible face and won't take another sip.

I have tried flavoring the milk with EVERY flavor I can think of, with no success. We have been working on this for several weeks now. I am starting to get concerned because his stools are more stiff (within the last couple of days). He is still drooling and tearing when crying, but I know the drier stool is the beginning of a road I don't want to go down....

Any ideas at all would be appreciated.

I have friends who said to just take the bottle away and he will eventually drink from the cup. Well, we're down to his bedtime bottle, and he still isn't drinking milk from the cup. (If I put water in it, he will drink that.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi- thanks for the responses. Fortunately, Dillon started taking milk from his cup yesterday!!! He has a milk protein allergy, so he can't eat cheese, yogurt, etc. to get calcium from other sources. I was really stressing out. Glad to be done with that hurdle. Kids keep you guessing, that's for sure!

J.,
As a mother of four raising 3 grandchildren I can only tell you my thoughts from experience. I also have a severe stomach disorder.

Milk is not all that it is cracked up to be these days. They are finding it can actually cause harm to children because of the added hormones. My 7 year old started developing at the age of 7. I took her to the dr. and this is what he told me was the cause of the early development. When I took custody at the age of 2yrs.10mos. she was only drinking milk with Karo syrup in it.

I think it is a wonderful thing that your son likes to drink water. Actually, water will be better for his bowels than anything. The juice can cause tooth decay but water is perfect in every aspect. There are other ways you can give him calcium. You may want to check the internet of dr. as to what will help him get the calcium and vitamins he would get from the milk.

I hope this helps in some way.

J. - My pediatrician told me NOT to give my son milk in a sippy cup, juice and water only. That way, one he is sick of milk, he'll just give up the bottle. Also, listen to what your child is telling you.... cup - water, juice bottle - milk. Is it really necessary for him to drink milk out of the sippy cup if he only has milk before bed?

We had the same problem and found that warm milk in a bottle was what she wanted rather than cold milk in a sippy cup. We had to keep up that routine for a few months - she would drink juice and water out of the cup but milk from the bottle - and warm. After a few months we then tried a little warm milk in the sippy and that worked. We're now ready to start trying cold milk in the cup.

Hi J.! My 15 mo old is doing exactly the same thing. She has never wanted to drink milk at all. I consulted her pediatrician about it and was told that it is ok of they wont drink straight milk as long as they eat a lot of food with Calcium in it ( cheese, yogurt..etc) But she did say that we could try those little Gerber yogurt juices with 1 oz of milk mixed in (and gradually add more milk). My daughter now drinks a whole bottle of danimals with 2 oz milk mixed in and she never knows the difference. Hope this helps! Good Luck

Hi J.,try making the milk fun for him.Ask him whats his favorite color is.Get food coloring which is not harmful for him.And then let him watch you place one drop of food coloring in his cup of milk. That should work.Good luck,H.
