14 Month Old and Salmon

My son's uncle gave him smoked salmon and he loved it! Is this safe for him to eat? I'm a little concerned about allergies and a young child eating fish.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks to everyone's response!!! Since then he's had Salmon one additional time...didn't love it at first, must have liked to smoky flavor but eventually was gobbling it up...will feed him more fish....as well as chinese, thai...whatever he'll eat...which is just about everything! God help me when he's in his teens!

Fish is safe for your little one to eat! Mercury levels are the only concern so stay away from fish caught in most Minnesota lakes and shark, swordfish, tuna, walleye and other predator fish. Fish that eat other fish are naturally high in mercury.
Salmon is an EXCELLENT fish to eat. Wild caught fish has the lowest mercury levels.

If your son had an allergy, you would know it by now. And fish allergies are uncommon. Because most fish has mercury in it now, the recommendation is to have it no more than 3 times a week and stay away from albacore tuna and shark. Salmon is one of the best fish you can eat and wild salmon is healthier than farm raised, but both are good for your diet.

All good suggestions -- try other fish too, since this is the time they'll try pretty much anything (including dirt, rocks, grass, sand...). Both my boys are great eaters -- take yours out to Indian and Chinese and Thai to expose them to different flavors and spices.

Salmon is an excellent source of omega fatty acids but you don't need to eat it every day--I know the recommended serving size for fish for adults is only 2-3 servings per week.

My son ate salmon all the time at that age. Of course now that he's 3 he has become Mr. Picky and won't even touch it!
