11 Month Old Transition

I have a question. My son is 11 months old and I am having a really hard time getting him to eat "real" food. He will eat anything that is crunchy such as cereal, toast, fish sticks and chicken nuggets. He won't eat any pasta and only eats vegetables when he is in the mood. Is it normal for a baby to have so much trouble adjusting to new food.

What can I do next?

I would say it is normal...every child is different and each one learns to like different foods at different times. I would say just be patient and if he doesn't like something the first or second time wait a little bit and then try again later, like in a month. At first my (now 11-month-old) daughter would not eat bananas- she gagged on them every time, but about three weeks ago I tried to give her some small bites and she ate them. Now she can't get enough banana. Just keep trying, but also be patient! This is all definitely a learning process.

Remember when you were feeding him baby food? Those fruits and veggies aren't new foods- they're just in a new way. You said he likes crunchy- try small pieces of apples. And blanched baby carrots (not quite cooked, so there's texture to it, but not hard anymore). Think about what you define as "real" food. Is it what you're eating at the table? He could eat what you're eating- don't make another meal just for him. Watching you eat it will encourage him to eat it. Just be sure it's appropriate, of course. And you could give him fruit with dinner instead of veggies if you think he'll eat them. Keep up the great work!

If it makes you feel any better my daughter is almost 14 months, and she eats about the same. It really all depends on if they have teeth or not. It's very normal. I would not worry about it at all. It sounds like he's a good eater to me though he's only 11 months and thats very good.

Hi!
My son is also 11 months old, he will be 1 on Dec 7th....

It seems your son has a thing for texture! Can't blame him right.. thats the good stuff! lol

I've never given my son anything fried yet... and to get him to eat his veggies, I add melted cheese and he digs in! Actually, adding cheese to just about ANY food for him really works.

I would really try to push healthier things though. Try cooking them different, adding a little butter or cheese or even a little salt can go a long way.

Good luck!

I think it is normal for babies to adjust to new foods. Try usuing ketchup or applesauce, put it in a small bowl or a container lid and have him dunk it. Taste buds are a funny thing and can be frustrating but I wouldnt worry unless he had a weight loss or change in bowels. My oldest ate poptarts for the longest time, only thing he really like ( of course there were a few other foods ) but I remember the poptarts were a MUST HAVE in the house, and my youngest ate chicken nuggets it seems like forever until I tried the applesauce and ketchup then he tried new things, even dipped fruit in the ketchup ( gross to me but yummy to him ) but if he liked it and ate it, he got it. Best of luck, You're doing fine.

sounds pretty normal to me. Just keep exposing him to different things, but sounds like he eats pretty well. I have a 2 yr old that eats everything but my 5 yr old is very picky. Your son will come around!
