10 Mo. Old Needs to Switch to Sippy Cup

Well I have been told that now is a good time to start getting my daughter to drink her formula through sippy cups..in order to train her so that she will drink milk out of them at 1 year. She has been drinking water out of a sippy cup since 7 months so she is pretty good at it ( minus holding it upside down quite a bit--but it doesnt leak!) Any advice on making this switch easier? I am getting worried..I dont really want to do it this early but I know its better. She drinks about 4 bottles a day right now.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

First, I have to agree...who told you she had to switch?

It took my son until about age 1 to even care about a sippy cup. He liked holding it, but didn't really like using it. Eventually, she'll get it and it doesn't have to be on a timeline.

We love the NUBY sippy cups of ALL shapes and sizes.

My one piece of advice is to have her sit at the table with you, no to let her walk around with her cup. I have always been pretty strict about eating and drinking at the table. I have friends who let their kids drink while watching TV, playing or walking around. There are spills and accidents and they find nasty old sippy cups under the couch and lying around. When it is time to eat, we sit at the table with no TV!!My daughter is now 3, drinks from a real cup, we dumped the sippy cups by age 2- not many spills since we only drink at the table!

Who said you had to switch? Don't stress out. It'll come. My daughter switched at nine months. She liked the childrens cups with the pop up straws. No more tilting the head back to drink - LOL ;) After getting one of these for xmas, she refused the bottle after that! You might try it.

This is absolutely nutty! You are stressing over something that is completely crazy. Who says she HAS to be on a sippy cup 100% of the time at 12 months of age? Who says she must start drinking cows milk at 12 months? Who is giving you these ultimatums? If it is a pediatrician, switch. If it is a book, put it down. If it is a mother or mother-in-law, politely disregard their advice. I have four kids, and thank goodness I did not try to mother them "by the book", or by anyone else's rules. The oldest is now 23, youngest is 9, and they are happy, well-adjusted people because I followed my instincts instead of the "rules". There is nothing natural, normal or healthy about the rules you are attempting to follow. They are nothing but a modern-day invention. You said you "know it is better" for her to switch to a sippy cup, but that isn't true, because earlier in the exact same sentence you said that you don't really want to do it this early. There they are! Your mommy instincts! Go with them. You will never regret it, and your daughter will thank you for it.

Hi There~
We used the "NUBI" brand (I think that's the right spelling) with the silicone tops. It's soft like a bottle so it wasn't a big stresser. They hold 6oz of water so it was easy to mix the formula, and they were under $2.00--can't beat it! :)
I was planning on keeping a night time bottle for another month or so, but she ended up preferring the cups and took herself off the bottle. Super easy! :)

Don't worry, she will get the hang of it in time. I first introduced the sippy cup to my babies at about 6 or 7 months so they would be able to drop the bottle and formula at 1 year and go to milk in sippy cups. With my first, it took him a little while to be completely "skilled" at the sippy cup(sometimes I wondered if he would ever get it!), but he did figure it out and even learned to keep them right-side-up. My second baby figured it out more quickly, probably because he was watching big brother. Your daughter still has a couple of months, which is not very long, but it really is a long time for a baby to develop skills. Just keep letting her use the sippy cup for water. I wouldn't even worry about getting her to drink formula from the sippy cup (if you enjoy the snuggle time with the bottle). She will get the hang of it when the time comes.

Just try giving her the formula in the sippy cup and see how she likes it. Since she's already used to the cups, it should be an easy transition.
When she gets to be about 11-11 1/2 months old, start mixing whole milk in with her formula to get her used to that. Start with about 2 oz./milk with 6oz./formula and gradually reverse them until she's on milk only. This is what I did with all three of my kids and it was a very easy transition. Good luck. :)

just start putting formula in it instead of water or juice. it will take a few times for her to like it and know its something good. after that she will be on her way! then when she starts drinking the formula with the cup start to give her a cup instead of the bottle at nap time and what not. this could be a quick change or a slow change take it one day at a time :). my daughter got introduced to the cup at 6mo. by 7 months she drank out of it and 3 days later no more bottle she took to it quickly and never turned back (now if only she would potty train as easy lol). good luck and keep up the good work!

Hi,
It worked really well for my son to just stick with the bottle. At 1 year, we slowly started substituting a little milk instead of formula until he was drinking only milk out of the bottle. After that, we started taking away one bottle a day (for a few days), then two, etc. until he was only drinking out of sippy cups. They don't have to drink as much milk as they are drinking formula. I would recommend not getting rid of the bottle because she still needs all of the formula right now and may not drink it well out of a sippy cup. Good luck!
Also, could you let me know what sippy cups you are using? I haven't found one yet that doesn't leak...

My kids would chug from a bottle but only sip from a sippy cup. I gave up and kept the bottle thing going until I could have a conversation with them and go out and choose some "big girl cups" to use for milk. They were each about 2 yrs old. Even after that, consumption tailed off. Also, the sippy cups get really disgusting before the bottles do. I vote for sticking with the bottles for as long as you need to. BTW...my kids teeth are both fine. (they are now almost 4 and 7)

We were worried about this switch with our daughter but it ended up being easier than we thought. We just switched one bottle at a time to a cup until she was only having one bottle at bedtime. Then eventually, we cut out the bedtime drink altogether.

Currently, we're in the last bottle stage with my son and it's working out just fine. I think it might be more difficult in the home stretch with him because he never took to a binky so there will be nothing to sooth him to sleep like there was with my daughter.

Anyway, just transition her slowly and there should be no problem. Good luck!

All of my children were bottle broke at the age of 9 months. It is all up to you as a parent when you think your child is ready to use a cup. If they are using a sippy cup for water, it shouldn't be hard to just add formula to it.

When our son turned 1, on his birthday we did a "toast" with a glass of milk, then for the next three days had no more bottles he gave us a mild time but was on the cup the fourth day.

Hi S.,

It sounds like your daughter likes the sippy so just start putting formula in it a couple of times a day to see if she likes it. If she doesn't like it go back to the bottle and try again another time. The one year change over to a sippy cup is just a guideline - some kids take longer to make the transition - and that's ok - your daughter will be fine if she uses the bottle longer. Let your daughter guide you in the transition so she is not stressed out by it.

HOpe this helps!

Hi. We have a 10 mo old daughter too and doing the same thing. We just give her cold formula in her sippy at meal times, she loves it! We still give bottles between meals and she has a sippy of water available all day. Eventually, we will decreas the volume of the bottles and increase the sippy amounts. Good luck!

Wal mart has a brand called nuby. It is a cross between a sippy cup and a bottle. It worked well for me. They do leak though.
