1 Year Old Teething or Whole Milk???

Ok I know the title looks weird but got a question here. My son has been on soy formula since he was like 8 weeks old. The regular formula made him really constipated. So anyways, we just finished up his formula last week and I spoke with his doctor to see if she wanted him to stay on soy or put him on whole milk. She said to put him on soy and see how he does and then after he has drank it all and he is fine with it, put him on whole milk. So I did this and he just started on the whole milk yesterday. The soy milk seemed to make his bowel movements runnier but not diarrhea runny. Just more loose. So he seemed to have his BM as usual and normally he goes at least twice. So unfortunately I am unsure what is goin on. He went to bed at 8 pm as usual and got up first because his leg was stuck between the rails on his crib (don't worry about this being horrible, he has very tiny legs and is kinda small at his age and his legs get stuck when he messes around). So anyways I went and got him and walked for a bit and laid him back down. Again he got up no more than. 20 minutes later crying. This time his leg wasn't stuck so my hubby got him and said he has noticed him drooling quite a bit. Now I haven't noticed this but maybe I have just missed it. I put him back down after giving some Tylenol. Again he got back up but this time about 1 hr later and was crying again. He was just sitting in his crib screaming. So I got him and took him downstairs and he seemed fine but he would get irritable. But after I gave him something to play with it occupied him for awhile and he was fine. I tried looking at his gums but he wouldn't let me. So now I am torn on whether it is his teeth or if the whole milk is upsetting his stomach.

When he was an infant he was in so much pain from the regular formula it constipated him so bad but once he got on soy he was fine. Now he just started acting like this at night tonight. When he has teethed before I would give him tylenol just before bed for a week and he was fine. I haven't noticed anything different lately other than this. Now that he is older, would he show the same signs like he did before when he was constipated or would it be different now that he is older? I am so confused and just looking for some advise. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I'd go out and buy some soy milk, and use it again. After this bedtime thing stops, try putting an ounce of whole milk into his soy milk. See how that goes. If all seems well a week or so later, add another ounce. Keep doing this until you have slowly transitioned to whole milk.

Maybe you went too fast. Maybe it has nothing to do with the milk, but at least you would know it isn't his stomach if he isn't sleeping back to normal after you have put him back on soy milk.

Have you tried Ibuprofen? Doctors recommended it for teething as it's an anti-inflamatory and helps with the swelling, and Tylenol never helped. My guy never let me look in his mouth when he teethed and his behavior sounds so similar I'm thinking it's teething. And call his doctor to get her opinion...it truly doesn't sound like the milk to me but I'm not an MD.

Did you just stop formula and start, full strength, the other milk? That is pretty h*** o* the little ones system.

Normally moms adjust the formula/milk ratio over the last couple of weeks or a month to transition the formula to milk. If you did that then he should be having no issues with the change. You would have seen this as you adjusted the portions.

If you didn't then I would imagine that baby is going to start really showing you how unpleasant his tummy is feeling today or the next couple of days....lol.

As for teething, that's always a possibility.

I say go back to the soy milk until he is acting normally, then try just a little bit of whole milk mixed with soy milk. If he gets fussy again a night as you reintroduce the whole milk, then you know it's the milk.

And yes, crying and fussiness is a totally normal reaction to whole milk if your son is still milk-intolerant. It could really make his tummy hurt.

I concur with Dawn ease the whole milk in. My little guy still at 22 months does bad with lactose but he can handle real yogurt and cheese just not milk and ice cream made from cow's milk. Lucky us there are so many alternatives to cow's milk. You have goats milk, rice, almond and yes soy too. Good Luck.

Have you ever explored the idea that he is lactose intolerant? My child has been on soy since he was about 10 months old because i knew what the problem was right away because I had been diagnosed at 8 with lactose intolerance because of constant diarrhea! When we took away the milk in both cases no more diarrhea! Then later I had a second child she did not react to milk as sensitive as my son and I do an I still as an adult have the problem. When I was pregnant for the first time, I was on WIC, which gave me vouchers an directions to drink 8 glasses of milk a day! I said I dont think that is a good idea I havent drank that much milk since i was 8! And explained my diagnosis! Well they encouraged me to take the vouchers an drink reg milk so I did an by Sun, which mon prior was when i got the vouchers, so abt a week, my stomach was rollin an within 15 min i had to rush to the bathroom, plz excuse the next phrase, it was like Niagra Falls! Oh my goodness It was so bad that I thought I was gonna go into labor! Needless to say I didnt drink anymore milk and went and got my vouchers changed to lactose free milk! Now back to my daughter, the one who is less sensitive, but still affected differently! My children were at a state daycare! The state required so much milk per day! Well that ended up being for every meal an snack! I had already bought soy for my son an got a DR's note for him but was not concerned that it would effect my daughter but we had not had milk in the concentration that they had it in, whole milk and that many times a day! By the evening of the third day my daughter was so constipated she was screaming to poop and bled from her rectum because it was so hard! It took her 2-3 hard poops and bleeding before 3 days of hard bleeding poop got out of her system! So the very next day I went and got her some soy milk and a DR's note! And it just so hapoen that I shared my issue with "grandma like" door greeter at walmart and she too has had the constipation issue with lactose intolerance! Well then later when I spoke with the DR. she said although it is not as common as diarrhea, constipation is also a side effect of lactose intolerance! Another case I ran into with a family that used whole milk several times through the night to get a toddler to sleep plus gave him whole milk through out the day! He woke up every morning with hot diarrhea scalding him from back to front, he literally was blistered and bleeding! I cured him w a butt paste called triple paste from Sum Labs that i had found! And begged the parents t find another alternative! And shared my experience with them of Lactose Intolerance! Please dont let the state fool you there is other ways to get calcium! Oh and even if teeth are the problem I would switch to soy anyway just to be safe side! If Lactose Intolerance has not been discussed with his Pediatrician, I highly suggest it! Thanks for reading! This sounds just like the milk. My son does this with cow, goat, and soy milk. Go back to the soy for a while and see what happens. He may not be ready to outgrow it yet. My daughter did at 13 months and my son still hasn't at 17 months. He may outgrow it, or he may not. My nephew didn't until he was 12. Listen to your baby mama!

My son is two and still can't drink cow's milk. He drink's rice milk, and I give him a vitamin.
Honestly, I don't think it's that important that they drink cow's milk. Many kids can't drink it because of the large enzymes in the milk, and that's what hurts their tummies. My lactation consultant used to stress, that cow's milk by nature is made for a 3-400 lb baby COW to digest, not human babies.
I would be a little hesitant giving him too much soy as well, I can't rememeber exactly but it has something to do with soy containing estrogen. Try rice milk, or an almond milk. And encourage a diet high in calcium and vitamin C. Good Luck!
